FROSTBURG, MD – The York College field hockey squad notched a
3-1 non-conference victory at Frostburg State University on
Saturday afternoon. The Spartans have won three straight and
improve to 5-4 overall while the Bobcats fall to 6-4. The match was
an out-of-league contest this year, but Frostburg State will join
the Spartans in the Capital Athletic Conference as a first-year
member in the fall of 2010.
Junior Katie Dawkins (Easton,
Md./Easton) got the scoring started off a penalty stroke
goal just 12:45 into the game. The tally was Dawkins'
team-leading eighth goal of the year. It was her first penalty
stroke goal of the campaign.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 2-0 just
before the half as senior Megan Spangler (Myerstown,
Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) converted an unassisted goal
for the Green and White just 1:01 prior to the half.
The Spartans outshot their hosts 14-3 in the
opening half while York also held an 8-3 margin in penalty corners.
The Bobcats cut the Spartan lead in half late
in the second half as Breanne Russell notched an unassisted goal
with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Spartans
answered by taking the play right back at Frostburg. York got three
shots and two penalty corners over the next eight minutes before
Spangler put the game on ice with an insurance goal with just seven
seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was her second of the
game and third of the season.
York finished the game with a 21-7 edge in
total shots and a 14-3 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White
also had a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners for the match.
Senior Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) recorded the win as she
allowed a goal with two saves in her stint in goal.
Frostburg's Maggie Edwards was busy with 11 saves in her 70
minutes of work.
The Spartans return to action when they travel
to McDaniel for another non-conference contest. Game time is slated
for 4:30 pm.
