OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's soccer team
posted a come-from-behind 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over
Stevenson University on Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills, Md.
With the win, the Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to 27
matches, as they are now 6-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the CAC. The
Mustangs fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The Mustangs jumped on the Green and White
early as Vinny Caltabiano fed a cross to Ansger Otto who finished
the pass for a goal just 5:33 into the game. The
goal came on the Mustangs' second shot of the day.
The Spartans received the wake up call and
immediately started taking the action to the Mustangs. The Green
and White outshot the hosts 12-0 over the remaining 40 minutes of
the stanza. Despite the Spartans' large advantage in shots,
Mustang goalie Ryan Flannelly kept York off the board as the hosts
took a 1-0 lead to the break.
It didn't take long after the break for
York to notch the equalizer as senior Jon Ports (Baltimore,
Md./McDonough) drove a shot off Flannelly but the ball
found the foot of fellow senior Travis Williams
(Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township) inside the six and
Williams drove home the rebound for the tying goal with 39:08
remaining in regulation.
York continued to pressure the Mustang defense
but Flannelly stood tall in maintaining the 1-1 tie. York fired off
15 of the next 16 shots of the game as they controlled the tempo of
the game. On the 17th shot, Ports converted the attempt
into the game-winning goal. The tally came with just 2:21 remaining
in regulation, keeping the Spartans unbeaten for the campaign. The
goal was Ports' second of the year and was also his second
game-winning tally.
The Spartans held a commanding 32-3 advantage
in total shots including a 12-1 margin in shots on goal. The Green
and White also owned a 9-1 edge in corner kicks while both teams
had seven fouls and one yellow card.
Freshman Jesse Derksen (York,
Pa./Susquehannock) recorded the win in goal despite not
being credited with a save in the match. Flannelly made ten stops
in the hard-luck loss for the Mustangs.
York returns to action on Saturday when they
host #2 Salisbury University in what could be the premier game in
the Capital Athletic Conference regular season. The game kicks off
at 2:00 pm at Graham Field.
