Box Score YORK, Pa. – In an unconventional style,
Carly Bock (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was able
to place one in the net as her shot gave York College the momentum
they would need, going on to beat Misericordia 2-0 on a rainy
afternoon at Graham Field.
Bock curved a corner kick from the left side during the 55th
minute, lofting her shot over the Cougar defense and managing to
have just enough of the ball cross the plane as she picked up her
second goal of the season and advanced her team's record to
4-1 on the year.
York had numerous other opportunities throughout the match on
corner kicks, outscoring Misericordia in that category 14-2, but
they were only able to make good on one of their chances.
During the first half of the match neither team were able to get
much of anything going, posting limited threats on goal. The
Spartans had a few opportunities where they were able to get some
solid crosses into the box, but each time the ball came trickling
out the opposite side as they failed to get strikes on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) did have two of her three saves
during the first half, capturing the win for the Spartans as she
teamed with a strong defensive effort to post a shutout.
The Green and White did not have as many quality scoring
opportunities as they would have liked, but they were able to make
the most of the situations they were given. Junior Ali
Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) crossed a ball in
from the right side, allowing senior Kat Torode (Brick,
N.J./Brick Township) to poke one home during a brief scrum
in front of the net at the 81st minute, giving the senior her first
goal of the season. With Jones' assist, she advanced her team
lead in points to nine on the season.
The Spartans held most of the possession during the second half,
finishing the game with a total of 17 shots compared to the
Cougars' six. Bock finished the game with three shots on goal while
Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) finished
with two, the only Spartans to record multiple attempts.
The York College women's soccer team will next travel to
Gwynedd Valley where they will take on the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins
on September 16 at 6:30 p.m.
