YORK, PA – Antonio Bua (Lancaster,
Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Mike Lansing
(Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) both tallied two goals as the
#2 York College men's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory
over Cazenovia College (12-7-1) in the first-round of the NCAA
Tournament on a cloudy day at Graham Field.
Bua started the goal-scoring spree for the
Spartans (16-1-4) only 11:06 into the contest. He was able to head
a ball from inside the box and tap it over the keeper's head.
“It's a body high, there is no
better feeling in a game opener,” Bua said after the match.
“If I just go in and play my game I will be able to make an
impact and I think I was able to do that today.”
Bua scored his second goal of the game in the
33rd minute. Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh)
took the ball to the end line, placed it across the six-yard line,
and found Bua in the middle of the goal box as he buried it in the
top right corner of the goal. In just his first collegiate NCAA
Tournament match, Bua's performance proved well beyond his
years.
“When I step on the field I do not look
at Ports being a senior and me being a freshman,” Bua said.
“We are all a team, it doesn't matter how old you are.
It's just about going out there and playing confident.”
Ports was also able to find the netting in the
first half as York went into the break with a 3-0 advantage.
Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic)
rifled a ball from 35 yards out that Cazenovia goalkeeper Ryan
Snyder saved but the resulting rebound allowed Ports to run onto
the loose ball before tucking it into the right side.
York opened up the second half with their
starters in the game, but that would not last long as their
reserves would play the majority of the half. The Spartans went to
their bench with 30 minutes left in the game and many of their
reserves would see quality minutes.
Lansing would get involved as he recorded two
goals and an assist during the second stanza, finding a great time
to notch his first scores of the year. Lansing would send a deep
lofted ball that found Matt Swiderski (Perry Hall,
Md./Perry Hall) as he recorded his assist as he later
scored off a Brett Sauerberger (Little Silver,
N.J./Monmouth Regional) free kick. Lansing notched his
second on a serve from Seth Hurley (Glenmoore,
Pa./Downingtown West).
Spartan head coach Mark Ludwig was pleased
with his team's results during the first round game and hopes
to build on that for tomorrow's contest.
“They did a good job on getting on them
early so hopefully we can build on this for tomorrow,” Ludwig
said. “I continue to stress that if you do your job that you
will be fine and the results will come for you. They have bought
into what we have been talking about and that is just to get better
every day.”
In the afternoon's latter match, #24
Amherst College topped Salem State by a 4-0 result, setting up
tomorrow's second round match. The Spartans will square off
with the Lord Jeffs from Graham Field in a 1:00 p.m. tilt. York and
Amherst have recent history as the pair also squared off in the
2007 NCAA Tournament. In the Sweet 16 that season, the squads
battled to a 0-0 tie before the Spartans prevailed in a
penalty-kick shootout.
Advance tickets for tomorrow's match
will be available for purchase in York's Grumbacher Sport
& Fitness Saturday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Free
student tickets are available for the first 200 current York
College students with a valid York College I.D. and can also be
retrieved this evening.
