YORK, PA-The York College women's
soccer squad pushed their win streak to three as the green and
white downed Marymount University 4-0 on a brilliant Friday
afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in
the CAC while the Saints fall to 2-9-1 overall and 0-4 in the
conference.
The Spartans got on the board early as senior Jill
Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) took a long
outlet pass from Kali Macgregor (Rockville, Md./Academy of
the Holy Cross), dribbled to the box and beat Saint
goalkeeper Carrie Schneider inside the left post for the goal. The
goal came 9:37 into the game.
Stanley tallied the game's second goal just 25
seconds later as Ali Jones (Riva, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) put a beautiful outlet pass on the foot of
Stanley who promptly beat Schneider again.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 24th minute as
Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) settled
the ball outside of the box and then flipped a pass to the foot of
freshman Katherine Leyendecker (Hillsborough,
N.J./Hillsborough) who promptly drove home the goal for
her first collegiate tally.
York closed out the first half scoring in the 34th minute
as sophomore Carly Bock (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) beat three Marymount defenders and snuck
the ball inside the far left post for her second goal of the
year.
The Spartans outshot the Saints 22-1 in the first half
while they also held a 7-1 bulge in corner kicks.
The second half was much like the first as York continued
to apply pressure to the Saint defense. The Spartans looked to push
the lead to 5-0 as Stanley struck a ball that bounced off new
goalie Sara Horne. Horne scrambled to collect the ball as the
sphere trickled across the end line. The ball clearly crossed that
end line but the sideline official missed the call and Stanley was
robbed of another goal.
Unfortunately for the green and white, Stanley
appeared to score again in the 59th minute as she chipped a shot
over Horne's head that as Horne had to retreat into the goal
to save the ball. Horne punched the ball out but long after the
ball had penetrated the plane of the goal line. Again, the call was
missed as Stanley and the Spartans were denied a goal.
The Spartans finished the game with a 34-4 edge in shots
including an 18-1 margin in shots on goal. The green and white also
held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans had the opportunity to play all three goal
keepers. Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) played the first 31:09 and she earned
the win as she did not face a shot in the game. Freshman
Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) played the next 35:08 as she made one save in her
stint. Senior Meaghan Cahill (Crofton,
Md./Arundel) played the final 23:43 and did not have to
register a stop.
Schneider was charged with the loss as she allowed four
goals on 22 shots in 45 minutes of action. Horne was not charged
with any goals allowed as she made eight saves for the Saints in
her 45 minutes of work.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday evening as they
travel to Gallaudet to face the Bison in a Capital Athletic
Conference contest. Game time in Washington, DC is set for 7:00 pm.
