OWINGS MILLS-MD-The York College men's soccer team
extended their unbeaten streak to 49 as the Spartans outlasted the
Villa Julie Mustangs 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action on
Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills, Md. The Spartans improve to
9-0 overall and 2-0 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 4-5
overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Spartans wasted little time in getting on the board as
All-American forward Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Patapasco) took
a Matthew Detzel (York, Pa/Central York) pass and scored just 42
seconds into the game. The Spartans continued to dominate the
statistics but would be unable to pad the lead. York outshot the
hosts 18-1 in the opening 45 minutes while they also held a 6-0
bulge in corner kicks. One problem for York is that they played a
man-down from the 39th minute on due to a red card.
Despite being a man-down for the entire second half, the green
and white struck for their second goal in the 54th minute as, for
the first time this year, the Ports brothers combined for a goal.
Senior All-American Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll
School) found sophomore brother Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh)
for a goal. The tally was Jon's seventh goal of the year
while the assist was Chris's first. The appearance for Chris
was his first after suffering an off-season injury that he is
continuing to recover from.
York added a third goal in the 58th minute as Justin Suchoski
(Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) picked up an unassisted goal for the
green and white.
The Mustangs' Tyler King spoiled the shutout with a goal
in the 85th minute.
Spartan junior Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) registered
the win in goal as he played 75:20 of shutout soccer in goal.
Sophomore Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) surrendered the
goal as he recorded 14:40 of time in net for York. Eric Lowman
started for the Mustangs and played 63:20 as he allowed all three
York goals. Lowman notched seven saves for VJC. Adam Wiatrowski
played the remaining 26:40 and also made seven saves for the
Mustangs.
York held a dominating 35-5 edge in shots while they held a 17-1
bulge in shots on goal. York had nine corner kicks to zero for the
Mustangs.
The game was physical as there were 25 combined fouls, one red
card, and nine yellow cards.
York returns to action on Saturday as they face Salisbury
University in a key Capital Athletic Conference match. The contest
is slated for a 2:30 pm kick off.
