YORK, PA-The York College men's soccer team
opened their 2007 conference slate in impressive fashion as the
Spartans defeated Hood College, 7-0, on Monday afternoon in York.
The Spartans were all business as five different Spartans recorded
goals. Extending their nation's best
unbeaten streak to 47 consecutive games, the green and white
improve to 7-0 (1-0 CAC) while Hood drops to 3-3 (0-1 CAC).
Looking for an early lead, York got on the
board in the fourth minute of action after a Hood foul left the
Spartans with a free kick just outside the box.
Senior Andrew Wheeler (Baltimore, Md. /
Patapsco) clipped a nifty ball to a streaking
Jon Ports
(Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh) who beat Hood goalkeeper
Shawn Fernholz to the far left post for the 1-0
advantage.
Merely five minutes later, Wheeler dished out
his second assist as he and Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) connected for the score. The
All-American played a bounding ball through the box to a wide-open
Mancuso who bravely headed home the tally past the on-rushing
Fernholz. Mancuso's tally on
Wheeler's team-leading seventh assist gave put the home squad
up 2-0.
The Spartans continued the offensive onslaught
as Kurt
Lane (Cochranville, Pa. / Octorara) found Ports in the
24th minute of play. Ports calmly collected
Lane's feed and hit his shot just off the inside left post
for York's third notch.
Finishing up the first half scoring, Brett
Sauerberger (Tinton Falls, N.J. / Monmouth Regional)
and Mike O'Connell (Bowie Md. / Archbishop
Spalding) combined for a beautiful goal in the 32nd
minute. Sauerberger played a rope of a cross from the
left side of the pitch to the far right post where O'Connell
slammed home the header. The tally gave York a
4-0 lead heading into the break.
In the 56th minute of action, Ports assisted
Mancuso for the senior's sixth goal of the 2007
slate. Ports registered his second assist of the
match, as well as his sixth point of the game, on a 60th minute
corner kick. The sophomore forward struck a
wonderful ball to the near post where Adam Good
(Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) was able to snap
his header into the net. Good's score is the
first of his young Spartan career.
Van Hare (Hanover, Pa. / Southwestern)
finished off the scoring in the 80th minute as he collected a
through ball and beat Fernholz for the seventh and final tally of
the match.
Constantly bombarding the Blazer net
throughout the 90 minutes of play, the green and white registered
30 shots while Hood could only manage a mere six
attempts. York also led in corner kicks
9-0.
Goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa. /
Pennsbury) recorded one save and garnered the win for
the Spartans while both Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md. /
Sherwood) and Kyle Brooten (Gladstone, N.J. /
Bernards) saw significant minutes in goal during the
match.
Fernholz was under steady pressure throughout
his 90 minutes between the pipes, but was able turn away 12 Spartan
shots making several athletic saves.
After a few days rest, the Spartans travel to
Lynchburg, Va. for a 5:00 pm match on Saturday.
The Hornets will be a formidable opponent for the green and white,
as they are currently ranked eighth in the South region by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of
America.
