BRIDGEWATER, VA-York College women's soccer easily took care of
Widener 6-0 on Saturday in the opening round of the Bridgewater
College Tournament. Four second half goals catapulted the
Spartans to the season-opening victory. The Spartan, who are ranked
25th in the nation, are now 1-0 while Widener is 0-1.
The green and white got on the board early as Emily
Sullivan (Bowie, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) notched her
first goal of the season. Assisted by Kali MacGregor
(Rockville, Md. / Academy of the Holy Cross), the CAC
first-team selection put the Spartans up 1-0 in the eighth minute.
York extended their lead just before halftime as Jenna
Knaper (Red Lion, Pa. / Red Lion) connected with
Ilana Kline (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) for the
Spartans' second tally. Kline's first career goal gave her team a
two goal lead heading into the break.
Although the 2-0 halftime lead would prove to be enough for the
victory, the Spartan offense was not satisfied. In the 49th
minute, Erin Kuhn (Turnersville, N.J. / Washington
Township) found the back of Widener's net.
Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa. / York Catholic)
assisted on Kuhn's first score of the season which put the Spartans
up 3-0.
Four minutes later, Kuhn recorded her second tally of the match
this time assisted by Jill Stanley (Stewartstown, Pa.
/ Kennard-Dale).
MacGregor put the green and white up by five in the 65th
minute. Taking a pass from Kayla Denmyer (New
Freedom, Pa. / Kennard-Dale), the all-CAC second teamer
buried her shot past the Pride keeper Rochele Jacobs.
The scoring was capped off in the 70th minute, when Sullivan fed
Erin Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove)
for the Spartans sixth goal of the afternoon.
York dominated play throughout the match tallying 19 shots to
Widener's three. The green and white also led in corner kicks
6-2.
Kristy Catelli (Allentown, N.J. / Allentown)
went the distance in net for the Spartans to record a shutout in
her first start as a Spartan.
For the Pride, Alee Gunter and Jacobs shared the goalkeeping
duties. The pair turned away seven Spartans attempts, as
Gunter had four saves and Jacobs three.
The Spartans play McDaniel Sunday in their second match of the
Bridgewater Tournament.
