#22 Cortland Tallies Late to Defeat York

YORK, Pa. - The York field hockey team surrendered a goal with five minutes left in a 2-1 loss to No. 22 Cortland at home on Wednesday evening.

Team Records
#22 Cortland: 5-0
York: 2-3

How It Happened
The Spartans came out firing and racked up a 6-0 shot margin with three shots on goal in the first quarter. The Red Dragons countered in the first and put three of their four total shots on goal, but York goalie Maddy Merlack denied Cortland each time.

York went back on the attack early in the third quarter and their efforts paid off following a penalty corner when Hannah Downs slipped a pass through traffic to Kate Egan on the doorstep who knocked in her fourth goal of the season. York's lead was short-lived as Cortland scored four minutes later off a corner. After Sadie Hoffman's shot clanged off the left post, Claire Flanagan controlled the rebound in the scrum in front of the net and fired it home.

The Spartans had opportunities to retake the lead in the final minutes of the third quarter, but the Cortland defense stood tall and killed off five-consecutive penalty corners.

After an early fourth quarter save by Cortland goalie Sofia Cannistraci, the Red Dragons dominated possession the rest of the way and ripped off five-consecutive corners of their own. On the fourth corner, the Dragons found the back of the cage as Lillian Morse set up Hoffman for the game-winner in the 55th minute of play.

York is now 2-1 all-time against Cortland … the Spartans owned a 20-10 advantage in total shots with a 10-7 edge in shots on goal … York also owned a 12-8 margin in corners … Cortland owned a 9-5 advantage in saves.
