Spartan Softball Clinches Postseason Berth in Split Against Stevenson

YORK, Pa. – The Spartan softball team  hosted Stevenson on Friday, splitting the last MAC Commonwealth doubleheader of the regular season. The Green and White fell 4-2 in game one, before a 11-0 victory in game two.

How It Happened
The Mustangs opened up the scoring in the top of the first, grabbing a 1-0 lead. 

Stevenson added two more runs in the third, extending their lead to 3-0. 

The Spartans grabbed their first run in the bottom of the fifth. Noelle Smith singled down the left field line, scoring Danella Silagy

In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs tacked on another run. 

York threatened in the bottom half, as Gretchen Barstad doubled in Ashlyn Weigle to inch closer, before ultimately falling just short. 
 
Courtney Freese started the game for York, recording 2.1 innings of work. Freese allowed two earned runs on two hits. 

Natalie Rietema came in for relief, spinning the final 4.2 innings. Rietema allowed only one run (unearned) on three hits.

How it Happened
The Spartans scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alexis McDonaugh had an RBI walk. Bri McKeown and Kate Miller brought in the Spartans' second and third runs on RBI singles. McKeown later scored on a RBI groundout from Allison Hunsberger. Danella Silagy brought in the sixth run of the inning on a RBI single. 

The Green and White scored five more runs in the second inning. 

McKeown roped her second RBI single of the game. Madison Karpovich later doubled down the line, scoring McDonaugh. Ashlyn Weigle brought in McKeown on a single. Silagy then brought in two runs on a single to right field. 

Natalie Rietema pitched the complete game, allowing a mere two hits in five innings. She walked five and struck out five. Rietema improves to 9-4 this season.

Spartan Notes
York is now 20-10 all-time against Stevenson… at home, the Green and White hold an 11-5 record over the Mustangs… Bri McKeown surpassed 100 career hits. 

The Spartans have wrapped up MAC Commonwealth action, ending with a 7-7 record. York locked in a postseason berth for the MAC Commonwealth Championship. 
 
Up Next
The Green and White will travel to Salisbury, Sunday. York will face the Seagulls in a non-conference contest slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
