Spartan Men’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short in Competitive Top-10 Battle at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 4 York men's lacrosse team fell behind early in the second half and came up just short in a 10-7 loss at No. 6 Salisbury on Saturday.

Team Records
#4 York: 3-1
#6 Salisbury: 5-1

Highlights
The first half had a little bit of everything mixed in and it all resulted in a 5-5 tie at the halftime break as the Spartans used opportunistic offense combined with a strong defense effort to keep the Sea Gulls in check. Salisbury held the advantage in multiple categories which included a 9-2 edge in faceoffs, a 21-15 shot advantage and a lopsided 23-12 advantage in the ground ball battle, but York caused four of Salisbury's nine turnovers and goalie Nash Womack made seven saves, including two against the Sea Gull extra-man unit. Each team had four penalties in the first 30 minutes of play, but only a combined total of three goals were scored on the extra-man units, including just one by York's top-ranked unit which entered the day with a 77.8% conversion rate.

The Sea Gulls opened the second half with a three-goal run in less than a four-minute span which forced the Spartans to play catch up the rest of the way. Cory Bergmann pulled York within one with back-to-back goals in the third quarter, but Trent Lucovich pumped in his second of the day late in the third as the Gulls took a 9-7 lead into the fourth.

The turning point of the game came early in the fourth quarter with Salisbury still up by two. The Spartans put together a valiant defensive stand as they fended off seven consecutive Sea Gull shots, capped by a Womack save. Unfortunately, the Spartans were dinged for an unnecessary roughness penalty just after the save and the Salisbury extra-man up cashed in to put the home side up three with 10:04 left.

Salisbury maintained the momentum the rest of the way and held the Spartan offense to just three shots through the final 10 minutes to eliminate any chance of a York comeback bid.
