Softball Concludes Virginia Trip with Sweep Over Southern Virginia

Spartans improve to 4-0

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The York College softball team concluded their trip to Virginia Friday with a doubleheader against Southern Virginia University. The Spartans took both games from the Knights with scores of 5-1 and 8-4. York comes back to Pennsylvania with a 4-0 record.

How It Happened
The Spartans got on the board early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Leadoff batter Allison Hunsberger singled up the middle to start the game. Danella Silagy followed, bringing in Hunsberger on a triple down the left field line. Kate Miller hit a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans ahead, 2-0.

The Green and White tacked on two more runs in the top of the second with back-to-back-to-back doubles off the bats of Noelle Smith, Ashlyn Weigle, and Allison Hunsberger

Kate Miller belted her first homerun of the season in the fifth to extend the Spartan lead to 5-0.

Southern Virginia plated one run in the sixth on an RBI single from Berkeley Whitten. 

Natalie Rietema was in the circle for the Spartans. In seven innings, she allowed six hits and one earned run, while walking two and striking out a pair.

How It Happened
York pushed one run across in the top of the first, scoring on a wild pitch. 

In the second inning, the Green and White brought home four more runs. The Spartans loaded the bases for Allison Hunsberger, who brought in Sara DeFrancesco. Devyn McFarland notched the third Spartan run, scoring on a wild pitch. Danella Silagy and Bri McKeown drove in Spartans' fourth and fifth runs. 

York added another in the third inning, as DeFrancesco crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from Hunsberger. 

Southern Virginia got on the board in the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-2 with back-to-back sacrifices from Eliza Patterson and Morgan Rich. 

The Green and White padded the lead in the top half of the seventh. An RBI groundout from Devyn McFarland and an RBI single off the bat of Hunsberger added the two insurance runs, making it 8-2. 

The Knights didn't go away quietly, grabbing two scores of their own in the bottom half of the seventh. Rich doubled home a run before Berkeley Whitten brought in another on a sacrifice fly. 

The Southern Virginia rally was shut down after that, as York came away with the 8-4 victory and completed the two-game sweep on the day. 

In the circle for the Spartans, Courtney Freese collected the win after hurling 4.1 innings, conceding only five hits and two earned runs. Kyrsten Coppage came in for relief, allowing four hits and two earned, while also preserving the victory for York.
