Softball Splits Against Eastern in Conference Opener

YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team opened conference play today with their first home-stand of the season. The Spartans came away with a split, grabbing a 9-6 victory in game two after dropping game one, 10-0. York now holds a 5-1 overall record, 1-1 in conference play.

How It Happened
Eastern stayed hot offensively in the first, playing two runs in the top half of the inning. 

The Spartans answered right away, as a Kate Miller walk and a Bri McKeown hit-by-pitch forced home two runs for York, tying it at 2-2. 

York took the lead in the second inning. Danella Silagy bunted, scoring Ashlyn Weigle. Silagy and Allison Hunsberger later scored on a fielding error by the Eagles. 

Eastern scored its third run in the top of the third, thanks to a Sydney Ostolaza home run. 

The Spartans added some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Allison Hunsberger hit an RBI single to center, Madison Karpovich scored on Hunsberger's hit, and Weigle scored on a throwing error by the Eagles. Silagy then hit an RBI single, extending the Spartan lead to 8-3. 

Eastern threatened in the sixth,  tacking on three runs to make it an 8-6 game. 

Sara DeFrancesco scored the Spartans' ninth run, hitting a solo homer over the center field wall. 

Kyrsten Coppage started in the circle for the Green and White. In 5.2 innings of work, Coppage allowed nine hits, six runs (all earned), and two walks. Coppage struck out one. 

Natalie Rietema came in for relief and recorded the save, allowing two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of work. Rietema struck out one Eagle.

How It Happened
The Eagles grabbed an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

Eastern added on a run in both the second and third innings, making 5-0. 

Three more insurance runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning for the Eagles. 

The final two Eastern runs crossed the plate in the top of the fifth on an error. 

Natalie Rietema and Courtney Freese split time in the circle for the Spartans. In one inning of work, Rietema allowed three hits, four earned runs, and four walks. Reese followed with six hits, five earned runs, and three walks in her four innings pitched. Reese also struck out four Eagles.

York is now 15-10 all-time against Eastern … The Spartans snapped a four game losing streak against the Eagles … York now holds a 7-3 home record over Eastern.
