York Sweeps Roanoke in Season Opener

SALEM, Va. – The York College softball team opened up the season Wednesday on the road against Roanoke College. In the doubleheader, the Spartans swept the Maroons, taking game one by a score of 6-1 and game two 8-4.

How It Happened
• Game one was a stalemate through the first two innings. The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third when Danella Silagy doubled down the left field line, scoring Ashlyn Weigel.
• Roanoke threatened in the bottom half of the third with a leadoff walk, followed by a one-out single. Natalie Rietema shut down the threat, getting a popout and a groundout to end the inning. 
• The fifth inning was York's offensive explosion. Weigel started the inning with a leadoff walk and stole second. Freshman, Allison Hunsberger roped an RBI double to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. After Roanoke surrendered back-to-back walks, Kate Miller brought in Hunsberger on an RBI single. The Spartans scored their fourth run on a wild pitch. With two outs, Madison Karpovitch hit a two-run double, giving the Spartans a 6-0 lead.
• The Maroons' lone run came in the bottom of the sixth, when Heather McQueeny collected an RBI double. 
Courtney Freese came in for 1.2 innings of relief work, allowing two hits and recording a strikeout.

How It Happened
• Roanoke scored in the first inning off of an error.
• York scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Danella Silagy notched a double, followed by Kate Miller doubling to bring Silagy home. Bri McKeown hit an RBI single to center, and Madison Karpovich made it a 3-1 game with an RBI single to score McKeown.
• In the bottom half of the third, Roanoke had a sacrifice fly, chopping the Spartan lead in half at 3-2.
• The Spartans tacked on five runs in the fifth inning. Kate Miller hit her second double of the game. Bri McKeown hit her second RBI single, giving York a 4-2 lead. Sara DeFrancesco roped an RBI double to right field. Mavica Mendez followed that with a pinch hit two-run double, padding the lead to 7-2.
• The Maroons tried to rally in the seventh, scoring two runs. The Spartans ended the rally with back-to-back fielder's choices.

York is now 3-2 all-time against Roanoke … This is the first match-up at Roanoke … pitchers Natalie Rietema, Courtney Freese, and Kyrsten Coppage tossed 14 innings as they scattered 12 hits and struck out eight … Freese earned the first save of the season for the York pitching staff … Offensively, the Spartans had eight doubles in the doubleheader.
