Baseball Splits Twin Bill With Widener

Four Spartans go yard in game two

YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team played host to Widener University on Saturday for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. The Spartans split with the Pride, dropping game one, 6-5, and picking up the win in game two, 12-3. The Green and White are now 5-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.

How It Happened
Widener struck first, grabbing the 2-0 lead on a home run in the top of the second. 

The Spartans were able to get one run back in the bottom half of the second on an RBI groundout from Brett Michael

In the top of the fourth, the Pride extended their lead with a second two-run homer. 

An RBI single off the bad of Matthew Wade brought the Spartans one closer, making it 4-2. 

A third two-run blast for Widener added two more insurance runs, extending the lead to 6-2. 

York did not go away quietly, tallying two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom half of the seventh. 

Lucas Prendergast recorded the RBI single in the sixth that was followed up by a sacrifice fly from Alex Neeld

Another sac fly off the bat of Joe Urban pulled the Spartans within one, as the rally came up just short. 

Three Spartans saw time on the bump in game one. 

Dillon Michaloski started for York, tossing five innings. Michaloski surrendered only one earned run on seven hits, walking zero and striking out five. 

Sam Ross followed, pitching two thirds of an inning. Ross allowed two earned runs, one hit, and two walks in 0.2 IP. 

Lane Berkey finished the game on the mound to the Green and White, allowing only one walk in 1.1 clean innings. Berkey struck out one batter.

How It Happened
Kevin Bukowski gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead on a solo shot in the top half of the first inning. 

The Spartans grabbed the next six runs of the ballgame. 

In the bottom of the first, Richard Kline answered with an RBI double to score Ryan Niedzialkowski

Alex Neeld grabbed the lead for the Green and White in the bottom of the third, launching a two-run home run to right center. 

The Spartans added another with an RBI single off the bat of Joe Urban

Luke Moser then scored on a double steal to extend the lead to 5-1. 

Two more York runs crossed the plate in the third, as Jackson Ford blasted a two-run homer of his own to left center. 

Widener grabbed one back on an RBI double in the fifth. 

Urban knocked one over the fence in the bottom of the fifth, making it 8-2 in favor of the Green and White.    

Widener's Ryan Bauerle hit a sac fly to get the Pride within five in the seventh. 

York added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Lucas Prendergast recorded a sacrifice fly, and Nieldzialkowski clobbered a two-run homer. 

Urban drove a single through the left side in the eight, scoring the twelfth and final Spartan run. 

Brian McDermott earns the win on the mound. In seven innings of work, McDermott allowed only seven hits, three earned runs, and one walk, while striking out two.

Jake Ludwig finished the game for the Spartans. Ludwig conceded only two walks in two clean innings of work.

York is now 14-7 all-time against Widener … The Spartan now hold a 7-4 record at home over Widener… The two teams are 5-5 in the last ten matchups.
