Softball Walks It Off Against Susquehanna

YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team hosted Susquehanna for a non-conference doubleheader. The rain prevented game two from happening, but in game one, the Spartans won on a walk-off, 3-2 over the River Hawks.

The Spartans and River Hawks were knotted up until the bottom of the fourth inning. Gretchen Barstad drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run of the game. The next Spartan batter, Noelle Smith, pinch-hit and singled through the left side, scoring Bri McKeown, putting the Green and White ahead, 2-0. 

The River Hawks tied it up, 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning on a Spartan error.  

In the bottom of the seventh, Noelle Smith continued to have the hot bat and lead off the inning with a double. Ashlyn Weigle laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving pinch-runner Devyn McFarland. Allison Hunsberger delivered the game-winning hit, singling up the middle to score McFarland. 

Natalie Rietema collected the win for the Spartans. She pitched the complete game, allowing three hits, two unearned runs, and two walks. Rietema fanned 11 River Hawks. 

Spartan Notes
York is now 9-13 all-time against Susquehanna … The Spartans have won the last two games against the River Hawks  … This is the first one-run victory over Susquehanna since 2010.

Rain dampened game two of the twinbill. The River Hawks took a 6-1 lead, but the game was called after three innings due to rain, resulting in a no contest. 
 
Up Next
The Spartans return to MAC Commonwealth action Saturday, March 21st, on the road against Albright College. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
