#19 York Men’s Basketball Outlasts Gettysburg to Open New Year

YORK, Pa. - The 19th-ranked York men's basketball team opened the new year with a nail-biting 64-61 victory over Gettysburg at home on Saturday in York's last non-conference tilt of the season.

Colin Treude ultimately lifted the Spartans to victory when he knocked down the game-clinching three with six seconds left which also blew the roof off a tense Grumbacher Center as fans and alumni packed the building to witness the Spartans take on their former long-time head coach Matt Hunter in his return to Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

Gettysburg: 5-7
#19 York: 10-1

How It Happened
After an Aleks Smith layup gave York a 5-2 lead 90 seconds after the opening tip, the Bullets took control with a 17-5 run which spanned over six minutes and gave Gettysburg a 19-10 lead. The Bullets eventually increased their lead to double digits (27-17) on a Kosta Radulovic free throw with 3:56 left in the half and later bumped the lead up to 11, their largest advantage of the game, when Ray Zamloot knocked down a jumper with 3:23 remaining for the break.

Gettysburg's double-digit lead would not hold up heading into the locker room as York closed out the first half with some offensive momentum. Jayden Rowe hit a jumper with 1:52 left which ignited a 10-4 run by the Spartans to close out the first half which was capped off by a last-second three by Ben Troyer as York trailed 33-28 at the half.

Rowe and Cooper Haberern hit two big three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half to trim the Gettysburg lead down to just one point, and Tate Landis put the Spartans back on top, 37-36, with 15:26 left to play after knocking a free throw to finish off a three-point play.

The two teams continued to trade blows the rest of the way as the game remained locked in a one-possession battle throughout the vast majority of the second half which had nine lead changes and seven ties.

With 25 seconds left, York went ahead by five, their largest lead of the game, on a pair of Rowe free throws which gave the Green and White a 61-56 lead. After breaking the one-possession cycle it looked like the Spartans were on their way to seal the win, but Caleb Gillus suddenly scored five unanswered points for the Bullets to tie the game, 61-61, with 10 seconds left.

The stage was set for a dramatic finish and that is exactly how it unfolded. On the ensuing Spartan possession, Landis found a wide open Colin Treude in the left corner who knocked down the biggest three so far in his career which held up as Saturday's game-winning shot.

Up Next
The Spartans open Commonwealth play and start their conference title defense with a trip to Eastern on Wednesday.
