Widener Fends Off Second Half Push by Spartans

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team's second-half comeback bid was snuffed out in a 69-53 loss at home to Widener on Wednesday night.

The Spartans trailed by as much as 18 points in the second quarter and came back to cut the Widener lead down to just three deep into the third quarter, but the Pride ended the game on a 24-11 run to pull off the win.

How It Happened
The Spartans opened the game on a 12-6 run less than five minutes after the opening tip with Shealyn Ricks leading the way with six points during that span. From that point, the York offense went dormant for over 11 minutes of play while the Pride ripped off a 24-0 run which stretched deep into the second quarter. Olivia Shutter ended York's scoreless drought with a three-pointer with 3:34 left in the second quarter which sparked a 9-4 Spartan run to finish the first half as they trailed, 34-21, at the break.

After trailing by as much as 18 in the second quarter, the Spartans battled back to cut their deficit to just three points with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Ricks (9) and Makenna Zimmerman (5) combined for 14 points on York's 21-11 rally to cut the game back down a single-possession margin.

The Pride went on to out-score the Spartans 11-2 to finish out the third quarter and take a 56-44 lead into the fourth. Widener held York in check throughout the fourth quarter as they owned a 13-9 lead to close out the victory.

The Spartans are now 3-10 all-time against Widener with the Pride winning the last three meetings … York is 5-6 at home this season and Widener is 9-3 away from their home floor … the Pride extended their season win streak to five games.
