Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The York women's basketball team dropped another close battle, 53-46, with Commonwealth-leading Messiah on the road on Saturday.

Team Records
York: 6-13 (4-4 MACC)
Messiah: 15-4 (7-1 MACC)

How It Happened
York took an 8-7 lead after the first quarter of play on an Alyssa Dougherty layup with under 20 seconds left to play. The Spartans stifled the Falcons in the first period as they shot just 2-for-16 from the field, including a 1-for-5 effort from beyond the arc.

The Spartans and Falcons traded blows through most of the second quarter before York went scoreless through the final three minutes and Messiah closed the period on a 7-0 run to take a 26-20 halftime lead.

York held Messiah in check as the Spartans out-scored the Falcons, 13-11, in the third quarter with the host squad owning a slim 37-33 lead at the end of the period. The Falcons went on a 7-2 run to take a nine-point lead, their largest of the day, less than three minutes into the fourth quarter. Spartans remained close, but just could not reel the Falcons back in as Messiah maintained a two-possession lead the rest of the way.

Up Next
The Spartans hit the road again on Wednesday for a Commonwealth contest at Alvernia set for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
