Spartans Pull Away Late in Road Win Over Alvernia

READING, Pa. - The York College men's basketball team bounced back on Wednesday night with a 79-62 victory at Alvernia to remain undefeated on the road in Commonwealth play.

Jayden Rowe led all players with 26 points, while Tate Landis poured in 18 and Aleks Smith hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds. Defensively, the Spartans held the Golden Wolves to a season-low 62 points on a season-worst 38.3% field goal percentage and a 0-for-13 performance from three-point range.

Team Records
(RV) York: 12-2 (2-1 MACC)
Alvernia: 8-5 (2-1 MACC)

How It Happened
Aside from an early six-point Alvernia lead, the first half mostly remained locked in a one-possession battle. That theme changed in the late minutes of the half when Jayden Rowe erupted for eight-straight points in less than two minutes to give the Spartans a 35-31 leading into the halftime break.

The Spartan lead fluctuated as the second half unfolded, beginning with an 11-point lead less than three minutes in when Cooper Haberern knocked down a pair of three-pointers on an eight-point run. The Wolves responded with a 13-4 run which lasted nearly six minutes to cut the deficit to two, 48-46, with 11:30 remaining.

York answered with an 11-0 run, sparked by back-to-back buckets by Nick Schroeder, and the lead never dipped below double-digits the rest of the way as the Spartans wound up out-scoring the Wolves, 44-31, to pull away to a 17-point victory.

Up Next
The Spartans return home on Saturday to host Messiah University in a Commonwealth contest set for a 3 p.m. tip-off.

Notes
York is now 10-13 all-time against Alvernia and has won the last four meetings with the Golden Wolves … the Spartans are 6-0 away from home this season, while the Blazers are 4-5 on their home hardwood … York held Alvernia's top two scorers, Robert Cottrell (18.2 ppg) and Rasheem Dearry (16.5 ppg), well below their season averages as Cottrell netted 10 points while playing all 40 minutes and Dearry only managed to score six in 30 minutes of play … Jayden Rowe, the Commonwealth's leading scorer, poured in 26 points for his 11th 20-plus performance of the season.
