Hood Tops #23 York in Heavyweight Commonwealth Clash

YORK, Pa. - The No. 23 York College men's basketball team suffered a 95-78 setback to Hood College at home on Saturday in a battle of two teams which sat atop the Commonwealth standings entering the day with double-digit wins each.

After a 40-40 halftime tie, the Blazers erupted in the second half and out-scored the Spartans, 55-38, to pull away with the victory. Hood shot a dazzling 62.1% from the field in the second half while the Spartans were limited to just 33.3%.

How It Happened
After five lead changes and six ties, a highly competitive first half resulted in a 40-40 tie. A Jayden Rowe layup with 16:04 left in the first half put the Spartans ahead by six (11-5) which wound up being the largest lead by either team in the half and the largest lead of the game for York. From there, the Spartans never trailed until under six minutes to play in the half when Karron Mallory knocked down a trey to put the Blazers ahead, 33-32.

The Spartans responded on their ensuing possession with a Rowe three-pointer which led to a back-and-forth shootout through the final five minutes of the first half. Rowe ended up leading the way for York at half with 11 points, while Cooper Haberern and Ben Troyer each poured in nine. Jevon Yarborough led Hood and all scorers with 12 points with Kullen Robinson chipping in 10.

The second half opened with five lead changes in the first two minutes with Hood taking a 46-45 advantage on a Mallory layup with 17:55 left to play. Surprisingly, that lead change wound up being the final one of the game after a closely contested game morphed into a one-sided success story for the Blazers.

After taking the lead, Hood ripped off five more unanswered points to take a 51-45 lead and later stretched their lead to 11 points on a Yarborough three-pointer with 14:05 left to play. The Hood lead would increase to 12 with under 10 minutes to play, but from there, Spartans gained traction on a comeback bid. Over the next four minutes, York mounted a 13-3 run, capped by a Troyer three-point play, which trimmed the Hood lead down to two (73-71) with 5:20 remaining.

The Spartans struggled to keep the momentum rolling and wound up shooting just 3-for-9 from the field in the final five minutes. Conversely, Hood's high-powered offense finished the game shooting 7-for-9 and out-scored York 21-7 down the stretch.

Up Next
The Spartans travel to preseason Commonwealth favorite Alvernia on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
