Strong First Half Leads Men's Soccer to Victory in Home Opener

Gavin Huey led the way with a goal and an assist in the win

YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team finally opened their home campaign for the 2025 season. The unveiling was a successful one as the Spartans blanked Susquehanna 2-0 on Wednesday night in York.
The Spartans got a pair of first half goals and then made those stand in a more defensive oriented second half.
York improves to 2-1-2 overall while the River Hawks fall to 1-3.

How It Happened
• The Spartans were the aggressors early as they carried the play early in the match. York's first great scoring opportunity came on a Jacob Fato shot attempt in the 16th minute of play. Susquehanna keeper Finn Kramer made a tremendous save to keep York off the board, at least for another minute.
• That save resulted in a corner kick for York that was taken on the left hand side of the field. Owen Henderlite sent the corner to the near post where Gavin Huey collected the ball and sent it over to Matt Martin about five yards away. Martin was able to get a leg on Huey's pass and notch his second goal of the year for the 1-0 lead.
• York made it 2-0 just over nine minutes later on another quality goal. The Spartans drew a foul from about 45 yards outside the goal. Dylan Marco took the free kick and bent it towards the far left post. Huey was able to get a head on the ball and redirect it home for his second goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.
• York held a 9-5 margin in first half shots including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. York also had a 5-1 bulge in first half corner kicks.
• The second half lacked the offensive execution on either end as the second 45 was without any scoring. The Spartans had an 11-4 edge in total second half shots as Susquehanna never really threatened despite multiple halftime adjustments. York finished the game out shooting Susquehanna 20-9 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal. The Spartans held an 8-3 margin in corner kicks in the win.

Up Next
The Spartans head back out on the road on Saturday to face the Lancaster Bible College Chargers in a non-conference contest. The two teams tied last fall in York and it was that tie that likely kept the 14-2-5 Spartans out of the NCAA Tournament last year. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start in Lancaster.
