Spartan Men Can't Overcome Early Game Seahawk Goal

St. Mary's scored 15 minutes into the game and York could not notch the equalizer

SALISBURY, MD – The York College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Mary's College in the second match of the Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament hosted by Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Maryland.
The Spartans gave up an early goal but battled back, forcing the St. Mary's defense to make a number of strong plays to keep the Green and White off the board.
York falls to 0-1-1 while the Seahawks improve to 2-0.

How It Happened
• For the second straight game, the Spartans fell behind early in the match. This time it was Nick Haney with the goal 15:07 into the game. The goal was Haney's first of the year and came off a free kick just outside the box after a Spartan foul.
• The Spartans had some opportunities as they fired off six shots with three coming on goal in the first half but St. Mary's goalie Jordan Eckman registered three first half stops.
• The Green and White forced Eckman to make a pair of shots in the opening six minutes of the second half while York keeper Jake Bono also made a pair of saves for York. The Spartans continued to pressure the Seahawks as Elaiwe Ikpi and Ricky Cicmanec fired off back-to-back shots on goal only to have Eckman record a pair of saves to keep York off the board.
• The Spartans had another great shot with 14 minutes left when Aiden Hall ripped a strike from the wing only to have Eckman flick it over the goal for a corner. On the ensuing corner, the Spartans had a break down on the clear as the Hawks had a one-on-one breakaway but Bono made a huge stop to keep it at a one goal deficit.
• York had back-to-back corner kicks with just over ten minutes remaining but neither chance bore a meaningful opportunity. York had one last chance with 1:30 left as they earned another corner kick but the end of the play resulted in St. Mary's clearing the ball harmlessly away as the Spartans couldn't generate a chance.
• York out shot St. Mary's 17-14 including 9-5 in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a significant 10-0 bulge in corner kicks but they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the margin of dominance.

Spartan Notes
The match up for the former Capital Athletic Conference rivals is their first since September 14, 2022 when the teams tied 1-1 in York … the Spartans still hold the all-time series lead 30-10-2 … York has been held to one goal in 180 minutes of play so far this year … York was shutout just once last year in the loss to Messiah … Jordan Eckman made nine saves in the shutout while Jake Bono registered four stops for York in goal.
