Men’s Soccer Fights Back for Opening Day Draw

SALISBURY, Md. - The York men's soccer team shook off an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw in their season opener at Salisbury on Friday.

After the Sea Gulls notched the game's first tally in the fifth minute, the Spartans remained persistent and found the back of the net as Matt Martin scored the equalizer in the 57th minute of play.

Team Records
York 0-0-1
Salisbury 0-0-1

How It Happened
The Sea Gulls jumped in front in the opening minutes of the contest when Dale Gordon made a run up the left side and hit a centering pass that took a deflection inside the box. Gavin Miller collected the deflection and buried the ball into the back of the net to give Salisbury the early advantage.

The host Gulls had the jump on York throughout the first half as they owned a 7-3 edge in total shots. Spartan keeper Jake Bono rebounded from conceding the early tally by making a pair of saves before the halftime break.

The Spartans came out of the break hungry for a tally as they put a pair shots on target in the first five minutes of play. That persistence eventually paid off in the 57th minute as Jacob Fato hooked up with Matt Martin for the tying goal.

Martin played the ball out wide to the right to Fato who then chipped the ball ahead just inside the 18-yard line. Martin beat his defender to the spot and ripped a left-footed shot through traffic for his first tally of the season.

The final six minutes saw action on both ends of the field, but neither team managed to break the tie. Bono thwarted away a dangerous free kick opportunity by Salisbury and the Gulls returned the favor on the other end as they snuffed out a pair of Spartan corner kicks in the final minute to preserve the tie.

Up Next
The Spartans remain at Salisbury to take on St. Mary's (Md.) in a neutral site contest slated for 1 p.m.
