Women’s Lacrosse Rolls Past Widener in Commonwealth Semifinal

Spartans Advance to Fifth-Straight Commonwealth Title Game

YORK, Pa. - The top-seeded women's lacrosse team cruised to 15-3 victory over fourth-seed Widener at home on Wednesday night in a Commonwealth semifinal round matchup.

The Spartans advance to their fifth-straight Commonwealth title game where they will face third-seed Stevenson at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.

How It Happened
The Spartans ripped off seven unanswered goals to take a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Gianna Huet led the way with three points on two goals and an assist, while Zoe Kluegel dished out a pair of assists in the opening quarter.

Clark Trowbridge scored the first goal of the second quarter to put Widener on the board for the first time on the day. The Spartans responded with two goals less than 50 seconds apart and added a third-straight goal by Kluegel less than three minutes later. The Spartans ended up taking an 11-2 lead into halftime after out-shooting the Pride, 18-7, in the first half and winning the ground ball battle, 11-6.

The two teams combined for three goals in the third quarter with Huet scoring twice for York and Jordyn Edwards adding her second of the day for Widener. The Spartans tacked on two more goals in the fourth quarter while posting a shutout behind a three-save performance by Audrey Simoes.

The Spartans will take on third-seed Stevenson at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Commonwealth Final.

York improves to 9-0 all-time against Widener since the series began in 2021 and is 4-0 against the Pride in Commonwealth postseason games … York is 9-1 at home this season having won six-straight and Widener ends the season 4-4 on the road … York is 20-14 all-time in conference postseason games … the Spartans have now won seven-consecutive Commonwealth postseason games and are 9-1 in postseason contests since joining the conference in 2021 … York advances to their fifth-straight Commonwealth title game and will take on Stevenson for the second-consecutive season and third time overall; the Spartans have won both prior meetings … the Spartans have held nine-straight opponents to single-digits this season and held the Pride to a season-low three goals in Widener's final game of the season … Gianna Huet led all players with a career-high five goals on Wednesday night … Maddie Ross led all players with six draw controls … Sydney Mentzer led all players with three caused turnovers to go along with three points and two draw controls … Zoe Kluegel matched her career-high with three assists as she wound up with four points on the night to climb to 195 for her career.
