Women’s Lacrosse Captures Fourth-Straight Commonwealth Title

YORK, Pa. - The top-seeded York women's lacrosse team jumped out front early and cruised to a 17-11 victory over third-seed Stevenson at home on Saturday to capture their four-consecutive  Commonwealth crown.

Senior attacker Zoe Kluegel was named the Commonwealth Championship MVP after racking up a career-high seven goals in the title game and had 12 total points in two conference postseason games.

How It Happened
York came roaring out of the gates and posted a 7-0 run which stretched into the second quarter. Zoe Kluegel fueled that run with four points on three goals and an assist, while Logan Ward scored twice and Krista Yarusso dished out two assists.

The Spartans complimented their offensive barrage with stingy defense in the opening quarter as they caused four of Stevenson's nine turnovers and held the Mustangs to just four shots.

Spartan goalie Bella Garabo put York on her back in the second quarter and carried the team to a 9-1 halftime lead after making six saves in the second quarter. Garbo made a pair of crucial stops on free-position shots and surrendered just one goal as the Mustangs compiled 10 total shots in the quarter.

The Mustangs came out of the halftime break with a head of steam and ripped off four-straight goals to cut the York lead down to four with 9:00 left in the period. The Spartans rallied back with five unanswered goals by five different players to end the quarter and take a commanding 14-5 lead.

Despite giving up six goals in the fourth quarter, the Spartans managed to keep a safe distance between themselves and the Mustangs. Kluegel stepped up for York in the final quarter and iced the game as she accounted for all three goals while her total swelled to seven on the day.

Up Next
The Spartans have earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship and will find out on Monday who and where their next opponent will be.
