#19 Spartans Slip Past Albright in Commonwealth Opener

Davis Fisher tied a school record with seven assists in the win

READING, PA – The #19 York College men's lacrosse team opened MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday as they registered a 12-10 win at Albright College in Reading.
Junior Davis Fisher tied the school record for assists in a game as he handed out seven helpers in the win.
The Spartans improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 as they have now won two straight and six of their last seven. Albright falls to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in the league.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a quick start as York scored off the opening face off as Nate Schilling scored courtesy of a Hugo Spencer pass after Spencer won the opening draw. York quickly made it 2-0 just over two minutes later as Cory Bergmann scored off a Davis Fisher feed. York added a third goal with 3:19 left in the first as Coleton Mahorney took a Fisher pass and scored. The Lions got on the board with a Nick Antonio goal with 2:46 left in the period. Eric Kaplan capped the first quarter scoring, finding the back of the net with just five seconds remaining in the period.
• York had a strong second quarter as they ripped off five straight goals to start the stanza. Mahorney, Sean O'Reilly twice, Antonio Santangelo, and Erik Pearl scored for the Spartans as they led 9-1. The Lions got a Jack Burke goal with 4:18 left in the half for the final goal of the second.
• Albright trimmed the lead to 9-3 to start the third but York ripped off three straight goals to push the lead to 12-3. Nate Samson, Schilling, and Colby Berard each scored for the Spartans as they were in control of the contest. The Lions rallied to score the final goal of the quarter as the Spartans took a 12-4 lead to the fourth.
• The Lions made it very interesting in the fourth as they outscored the Spartans 5-0, turning a blow out into a white-knuckle win for York. The Lions out shot York 13-5 in the quarter including 8-3 in shots on goal. Two of the Albright goals came in the final minute of the game with the Spartans holding a 12-8 lead.

York held a 46-32 advantage in total shots including a 27-21 margin in shots on goal … the Spartans dominated the ground ball numbers as they had a 28-18 bulge in the category … York was 19-for-21 on clears while Albright was 21-for-27 … York won 18-of-25 at the X … York had 18 turnovers while Albright had 19 … York had 12 caused turnovers and Albright had seven … Jack Burke led the Lions with four goals and two ground balls … Hunter Fitterling had three caused turnovers and two ground balls … Sean McNicholas allowed 12 goals and made 15 saves in net for the Lions.

York improves to 6-0 all-time against the Lions … York moves to 3-2 on the road … York has now reached double figures in goals in 10 of their 11 games this year … York recorded 10 assists for the second straight game and third time this year … York notched a man-up goal and that's just their sixth in 15 opportunities for the year … York created a season-high 12 turnovers … York won the battle at the X for the fifth time this year, 18-7 … York allowed double figures in goals for the ninth time this year and the sixth straight game … the Spartans have won six of their last seven games with the one loss being a one-goal defeat against #19 Denison … Coleton Mahorney, Nate Schilling, and Sean O'Reilly each scored twice for the Spartans … Davis Fisher tied the single game school record with his seven assists … Fisher tied the record of Cameron Leech who had seven in the April 22, 2017 game against Christopher Newport … freshman Grant Miller had a career-high three caused turnovers … Hugo Spencer went 8-for-9 at the X with six ground balls and an assist … the Spartans played five goalies in the game as senior AJ Apel made five saves and allowed just one goal in his 11:48 of work in the second quarter.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Alvernia University in a MAC Commonwealth contest. First face off is set for 7:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
