Women’s Lacrosse Clinches Postseason Berth with Win at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The eighth-ranked women's lacrosse team secured a Commonwealth postseason berth with a 18-6 victory at Widener on Saturday.

Team Records
#8 York 12-3 (5-0 MACC)
Widener 7-8 (3-2 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans put the game out of reach early with an 11-1 lead after one quarter of play in their highest scoring period of the season. York put eight of their 15 shots on goal as Widener did not record a save in the first quarter. The Spartans also scored on three of four free-position attempts and committed just two turnovers.

Gianna Huet led the offense in the first quarter with five points, all by assist, and assisted on the final four goals of the period. Sydney Mentzer and Logan Ward each netted a hat trick in the opening stanza to lead all goal scorers.

Widener scored consecutive goals to end the second quarter and to start the third which cut their deficit to 10, but then the Spartans scored three-straight to take a 13-goal lead, their largest of the day, with 6:22 left in the quarter. Mentzer scored twice on that run to bring her team-leading total five on the day.

Each team tallied twice and posted a pair of saves in an otherwise uneventful fourth quarter.

Up Next
The Spartans hit the road on Wednesday to take on Hood before returning home next Saturday to take on Messiah for the Commonwealth regular season crown.
