OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's lacrosse team used a huge second half to down #11 Stevenson 20-13 in a big MAC Commonwealth contest on Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, Maryland.
The Spartans outscored the Mustangs 14-6 in the second half including 9-3 in the decisive fourth quarter.
Cory Bergmann tied the single-game school record with eight goals while his ten points are tied for the second most prolific point game in school history.
The Spartans, who are 15
th in the most recent USILA National Poll, improve to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Mustangs fall to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. York has won five straight.
How It Happened
• The Mustangs got off to a quick start as they outscored York 4-1 to start the game. York got a goal with 34 seconds left in the first quarter as
Cory Bergmann found the back of the net for his second goal of the quarter.
• The Mustangs stretched the lead to 7-3 with a Max Racich goal at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter. York ended the half with a trio of
Gavin Gismondi goals as York trimmed their deficit to 7-6 heading into the halftime break.
• Stevenson scored twice in the opening three minutes of the third quarter to take a 9-6 lead. Bergmann struck again at the 10:58 mark followed by a
Nate Schilling tally that brought the Spartans back to within one at 9-8. Gavin Gossen extended the Mustang lead to 10-8 with 4:14 remaining in the quarter. Bergmann started a three-goal run over the final 3:41 in the third.
Colby Berard notched a man-up goal with 33 seconds left to tie the game at ten. York won the ensuing face off and
Sawyer Simeone scored off a
Davis Fisher assist to give York their first lead of the game heading to the fourth quarter.
• Stevenson scored two of the first three goals of the final quarter as the game was tied at 12 with 8:37 to go in the game. Berard notched a man-up goal with 7:59 left in the game and that kicked off an 8-1 run that covered the final 7:59 of the game.
Brady Watts and
Blake Morton pushed the York lead to 15-12 with 5:16 left. Darrell Curtis slowed the Spartan run with a goal that cut the York lead to 15-13. Bergmann removed all doubt with a three goal stretch that covered two minutes as the lead grew to 18-13. Fisher and
Erik Pearl finished off the scoring with goals in the final 1:20 of play as York made a serious statement on the road.
