No. 8 Spartans Defeat Stevenson in Big Commonwealth Clash

YORK, Pa. - The eighth-ranked York women's lacrosse team rushed out to a 10-0 second quarter lead on their way to a 15-7 triumph over conference rival Stevenson at home on Tuesday.

Team Records
Stevenson 9-6 (3-2 MACC)
#8 York 11-3 (4-0 MACC)

How It Happened
York had their foot on the gas from the start and stormed out to a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Spartan defense contributed mightily to the offensive's hot start as they caused all six of Stevenson turnovers in the first period. Gianna Huet led the way for the Spartan offense in the first quarter with two goals and an assist.

The Spartans continued to roll as the second quarter unfolded and tacked on three more goals to take a 10-0 lead with over six minutes left before halftime. The Mustangs broke their scoreless streak with 1:49 left and added another tally in the final seconds of the second quarter.

Huet and Logan Ward led the way with four points each, while Krista Yarusso had a pair of points for York in the first-half offensive barrage as the Spartans put 10 of their 14 shots on target. Defensively, Sydney Mentzer led the way with three caused turnovers in the first half as York forced nine of the Mustang's 10 miscues in the first 30 minutes.

The Spartans put further distances between themselves and the Mustangs with a 3-1 goal differential in the third quarter to swell the lead back up to 10. Spartan goalie Bella Garabo was the catalyst behind York's third-quarter performance as she stood on her head with five saves with Stevenson putting six of their seven shots on target.

Yarusso delivered the dagger for the Spartans with her goal on the opening possession of the fourth quarter which put York ahead by 11. The Mustangs went on to out-score the Spartans, 4-2, in the final quarter with a pair of woman-up tallies to salvage a little bit of their pride in what ultimately turned out to be a one-sided affair in favor of York.
