Men's Lacrosse Improves to 3-0 in Commonwealth Play with 15-9 Win

The Spartans got seven points from Gavin Gismondi in the win over Eastern

ST. DAVID'S, PA.- The #16 York College men's lacrosse team picked up their fourth straight win with a 15-9 victory over Eastern University on Saturday in St. David's, PA.
The Spartans had a big first quarter, outscoring the Eagles 7-3, and finished the first half with an 11-5 lead.
York improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Commonwealth. The Eagles fall to 5-8 overall while they are now 1-2 in the league.
 
How It Happened
The teams traded goals in the opening two minutes of the game as Cory Bergmann scored for York while Brennan Kaut found the back of the net for Eastern. The Spartans scored the next two goals as Coleton Mahorney and Blake Morton gave York a 3-1 lead. Frankie Fanelli cut the York lead to 3-2 with 6:07 left in the quarter. The Spartans answered by scoring four of the final five goals of the quarter to take a 7-3 lead after 15 minutes of play. Gavin Gismondi scored three of the four goals for York while Dylan McDougall recorded the other tally for York.
• York got off to a quick start in the second quarter as they pushed out to a 10-3 lead. Nate Schilling, Colby Berard and Davis Fisher scored for the Spartans as they run covered the first five minutes of the quarter. The Eagles scored two straight goals within 37 seconds of each other but York capped the first half scoring with a Bergmann goal with just ten seconds left in the period.
• The third quarter started with another Gismondi goal a mere 41 seconds into the second half. That started a run of the two teams alternating goals over the course of the next 15 minutes. Mahorney and Berard also scored in the quarter for York as the Spartans took a 14-8 lead to the final period.
• Eastern got a Brett Williamson goal with 9:24 left in the game, cutting the Spartan lead to 14-9. York got that goal back at the 4:34 mark to finish off the scoring for the day as Schilling recorded his second goal of the day.

The Spartans held a very slight 34-33 advantage in shots while York had a 22-18 edge in shots on goal … the Spartans earned a 37-28 margin in ground balls … York won 16-of-27 face offs .. the Spartans had 20 turnovers while Eastern had 21 … each team had 12 caused turnovers … York was 1-for-4 on the extra man while the Eagles were 1-for-5 … York was 18-for-22 on the clear while Eastern was 17-for-20 … Nick Litzenberger led the Eagles with four points on three goals and one assist … Brett Gougler added two goals and one assist for three points … Zach Puckett had four caused turnovers and three ground balls for the Eastern defensive effort … goalie Zachary Klym made seven saves and allowed all 15 Spartan goals.

The Spartans improve to 14-2 all-time against the Eagles … Eastern picked up one of those wins last spring, stunning the Spartans in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals … York is now 6-1 all-time in St. David's … York has reached double figures in scoring in all but one game this year … York has outscored their three Commonwealth opponents 54-19 and have out shot them 139-76 … the Spartans have won 55-of-82 face offs (67.1%) in league play … York's 11 assists in the win is their second highest total (21 vs. Alvernia) of the year … York scored just their seventh man-up goal of the year … York is now 7-for-21 (33.3%) in power play opportunities … York won the battle of ground balls for the ninth time this year and are now 8-1 when leading in that category … York is 7-0 when winning the battle at the X … Gavin Gismondi had another big day with seven points on four goals and three assists … the seven points for Gismondi ties his Spartan career high which he set the first time on Wednesday against Alvernia … Gismondi now has 43 points on 30 goals and 13 assists … Davis Fisher added five points on a goal and four assists … Nate Schilling chipped in with four points on two goals and two assists … freshman Brady Watts had a career day at the X as he was 11-for-17 with six ground balls … the 11 wins at the X and the six ground balls were both career highs … Jeff Mueller registered two caused turnovers and three ground balls for the Spartan defense … Colin Kane added two caused turnovers and four ground balls for York … Nash Womack picked up another win in goal with nine saves for the Green and White … Womack is 10-3 for the Spartans.

The battle for MAC Commonwealth supremacy will be held on Wednesday evening as the Spartans head to #12 Stevenson to face the Mustangs in a match-up of 3-0 teams. The first face off is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Owings Mills, Maryland.
