Big First Inning Dooms Spartans in Home Opener Setback

Rutgers-Camden scored 11 runs in the first to jump on the Spartans early

YORK, PA – The Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors spoiled the York College baseball home opener with a 15-9 win over the Spartans on a cold and cloudy Thursday afternoon in York. The game was called after six innings due to darkness.
The Raptors hit the Spartans with an 11-run first inning and York would not be able to overcome that big frame.
The Raptors improves to 6-1 overall while the Spartans fall to 0-5.

How It Happened
• The Scarlet Raptors began the game with a hit batter and two walks to load the bases with no outs. Jack Murphy doubled down the left field line to plate a pair of runs to open the scoring. Diego Salazar drove home two more with a double to right. Camden had their next two hitters reach before York finally got the first out of the game. The Raptors set 15 hitters to the plate as they scored 11 runs on six hits with one Spartan error. York pitching walked three and hit two others in the frame.
• Camden added a single run in the second to take a 12-0 lead. The Spartans finally got on the board in the third as Lucas Prendergast drew a lead off walk and came around to score when Michael Tinneny lined a two-run homer over the right field wall for his first home run of the year.
• York added two more runs in the fourth. Gehrig Fleming ripped an RBI single to right and Prendergast had an RBI ground out as the Spartans trimmed the Camden lead to 12-4. Rutgers-Camden got two runs back in the top of the fifth, pushing the lead back to ten at 14-4.
• York got a single run in the bottom of the fifth on a Chris Nesensohn RBI fielder's choice. The Raptors got a single run in the sixth for the 15-5 lead. The Spartans got four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tinneny had an RBI ground out to score the first run. Jason Cassidy had an RBI infield single for run number two. Nesensohn and Fleming each drew bases loaded walks for runs three and four of the frame. Unfortunately for York, the game was called after six innings due to darkness.

The Spartans had their four-game win streak against Camden ended with the loss … the all-time series is now tied at 10 wins each … the Spartans have now been outscored 12-1 in the first inning and 4-0 in the second inning … the Spartans nine runs were a season-high as were the nine RBI … York drew a season-high eight walks … the Spartan pitching staff allowed 12 hits marking the fourth time they have allowed double figures hits in their five games … York walked seven and hit four batters … York has now hit 12 batters in five games … York stranded 10 runners as they have now left 48 on in five games … Michael Tinneny had his third multi-hit game of the year while Jacob Deimling had his first with his two hits … Tinneny now has a hit in all five Spartan games this year … Deimling has a hit in four straight games … Tinneny, Deimling and Chris Betler have all reached bases safely in all five games … freshman righty Jake Ludwig made his collegiate debut as he threw 3.2 effective innings for the Spartans out of the pen ... the Spartans three opponents (Lynchburg, F&M and Camden) own a combined record of 22-4. 

Up Next
The Spartans travel to St. Mary's City, Maryland to kick off a three-game non-conference contest against the St. Mary's College Seahawks on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 12:00 pm start. The Spartans will then close out the series Sunday when they host the Seahawks in a single game starting at 1:00 pm at Jaquet Field.
