#16 Spartans Roll Past Shorewomen, 16-6

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The No. 16 York women's lacrosse team put together a balanced effort in a 16-6 triumph at Washington College on Wednesday evening.

The Spartans had to shake off some early travel lag due to unexpected closures on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which delayed the start of the game by two hours. The Green and White found rhythm in the second quarter as they hung seven goals on the board in the period which then extended into a nine-goal run for a 13-3 third quarter lead.

How It Happened
York went on top early with a pair of goals by Sydney Mentzer and Krista Yarusso in the first five minutes, but then cooled off for nearly seven minutes before Juliana Silvernale pumped one past McKenna Seashole to give the Spartans a 3-1 first quarter advantage.

Three goals were scored in the first 2:09 of the second quarter including back-to-back tallies by Washington which cut the Spartan lead down to one (4-3). Mia Salvatierra had the hot to that point for WAC as she scored twice and had an assist on her team's first three goals.

The Shorewomen came up empty on their next two possessions and the Spartans took full advantage by ripping off seven-straight to end the first half. Zoe Kluegel got things started with a natural hat trick to spark the offensive onslaught. Mentzer kept it going with back-to-back tallies and Silvernale sent the Spartans into halftime with a 10-3 lead after scoring with 43 seconds left before the break.

Bella Garabo kept the momentum on York's side after making two saves on Washington's first possession to start the second half. The Spartan offense sputtered through the first seven minutes of the third quarter, but then ripped off three-straight goals within a two-minute span to take a 13-3 lead with 5:53 left in the period.

Salvatierra found the back of the net for the third with 2:53 left in the third quarter which snapped York's nine-goal run and ended a 25-minute scoring drought by the Shorewomen.

Gianna Huet, Kluegel and Maddie Ross all found the back of the net early on in the fourth quarter to ensure the running clock would continue to wind. The Shorewomen tacked on a pair of garbage time goals in the final minute, but were unsuccessful in dropping below a 10-goal deficit.

Up Next
The Spartans are back on the road again on Saturday with a trip to No. 8 Washington and Lee.
