Baseball Drops a Pair of One-Run Games at Hood

The Spartans suffered their first Commonwealth series loss of the year

FREDERICK, MD – The Spartan baseball team suffered a pair of one-run losses in a key MAC Commonwealth sweep at the hands of Hood College on Saturday in Frederick, Maryland. The Blazers won game one 9-8 and earned the 6-5 win in the nightcap in come-from-behind fashion.
The Spartans are now 10-12 overall and 6-3 in the Commonwealth. Hood is now 8-16 overall and 4-5 in the league.

How It Happened
• The game was cruising along, scoreless into the bottom of the third inning. The Blazers plated a pair in the third. Keegan Brennan led off the inning with a single to left. Rhett Robbins scored Brennan with a double to right for the 1-0 lead. Ty Broughton then scored Robbins with a single to center for the 2-0 advantage.
• The Blazers made it 3-0 in the fifth courtesy of a Jack Petterson RBI double to right. Hood poured it in sixth as they scored six runs to turn a close game into a rout. The Blazers got six runs on just three hits with a pair of Spartan errors as they led 9-0 heading to the final inning.
• Much to the Spartans credit, they made it incredibly interesting in the top of the seventh. York loaded the bases to start the inning before Lucas Prendergast singled to center to score two runs. Gabe Trevena walked to re-load the bases with no outs. Michael Tinneny drew a bases loaded walk to make it 9-3. Alex Neeld had an RBI ground out for York's fourth and fifth runs. Jacob Deimling ripped a two-run homer to right to make the score 9-8. The Blazers escaped by getting the next two Spartans out to hang on for the dramatic win.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a great start with a three-run second inning. Ryan Niedzialkowski opened the scoring with an RBI single to left. Chris Nesensohn then plated two more runs with a single to right for the 3-0 lead. York left some runs on the table as they had the bases loaded with one out but the Blazers got the next two Spartan hitters to keep the Spartan lead at three.
• Niedzialkowski added to the lead with an RBI single in the fourth while Gabe Trevena made it 5-0 on an RBI single to center in the sixth.
• Hood hit the Spartans with a sixth run bottom of the eighth, and again, the Spartan defense didn't help their cause. Ty Broughton started the uprising with a three-run homer to left, slicing the Spartan lead to 5-3. After a ground out, the Blazers got back-to-back singles. York got a fielder's choice out for the second out of the inning. A Spartan error allowed the fourth run to score and extended the inning as the Blazers got two more RBI singles to take the 6-5 lead.
• York went in order in the ninth as the Green and White dropped the two one-run games.
