YORK, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Spartan women's lacrosse team prevailed, 10-9, in a back-and-forth nationally-ranked showdown with  No. 20 Stevens at home on Saturday.

The two teams swapped goals three times in the fourth quarter, but the final goal was scored by York's Sofie Steele with 2:20 left which held up as the eventual game-winning tally.

#10 York 5-2

How It Happened
York had the upper hand out of the gates and opened with a 4-0 run with Sydney Mentzer tallying a pair. Anna Velardi ended up scoring for Stevens with 1:22 left in the first quarter which ended up being the only shot of the period for the Ducks.

Each team tallied three goals in the second period as York took a 7-4 lead into the halftime break. Sofie Steele had a big quarter for York as she scored once and assisted on the other two Spartan goals. Emily Leiby scored a pair for the Ducks including a woman-down goal to open the second-quarter scoring.

Stevens took advantage of 10 Spartan turnovers in the third quarter and held York off the board. The Ducks managed to only score twice in the third quarter, but they went on to score the first goal of the fourth quarter to put together a four-goal run to tie the game, 7-7, with just under 12 minutes left.

The two teams traded two more times as Stefanie Sellitto knotted up the score, 9-9, with 4:39 left. A minute later, the Ducks had a prime opportunity to score back-to-back goals and take the lead, but Spartan goalie Bella Garabo came up with the biggest save of the game as she denied Leiby on a free-position shot.

Garabo's stop set the table for Steele's game-winning tally on York's very next possession and the Spartan defense came up with one more stop as Riley Long caused a turnover on Maddie Hogan with under a minute to go to ice the game.
