Kluegel Powers Spartans to Victory Over St. Mary’s

YORK, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Spartan women's lacrosse team fought their way back to earn a 16-10 victory over St. Mary's at home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans shook off an early deficit and out-scored the Seahawks 13-6 through the final three quarters. Zoe Kluegel led the charge as she racked up a career-best seven points on a career-high tying five goals with two assists.

How It Happened
The Seahawks put the Spartans on their heels in the first quarter as the visitors owned a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of play. St. Mary's moved out to a 4-1 lead with under four minutes to play on a string of three-straight tallies including a pair by Madison Laine and Ella Baynes less than a minute apart. The Spartans took back some momentum at the end of the quarter as Sydney Mentzer scored a woman-up goal with 1:13 left and Zoe Kluegel scored as time expired to cut the Seahawk lead to one.

York turned the tables over the next two quarters and only allowed a total of three goals after giving up four in the first period of play. Despite dominating at the draw in the second quarter with a 6-1 advantage, the Seahawks limited their success with six turnovers and were also denied three times by Spartan goalie Bella Garabo. York turned up the heat in the third quarter and out-scored St. Mary's, 5-1, to take a 12-7 lead. Kluegel recorded two goals and an assist in the third quarter and had four points on York's comeback push.

Katie Jeanes scored on the opening possession of the fourth quarter for her first goal of the season and Logan Ward registered another Spartan goal with under nine minutes to play. Kluegel delivered the knockout blow with a woman-up tally with 5:19 left which put York up by seven.

The Spartans will be back home on Saturday at noon to take on #20 Stevens in a MAC crossover contest.

York improved to 10-8 all-time against St. Mary's as the two long-time rivals met for the first time since 2019 … the Spartans have won the last four meetings with the Seahawks … Zoe Kluegel now has five career games where she has scored five times and set a new single-game career high with seven points on Wednesday … Kluegel leads the Spartans with 25 points and 20 goals, and is averaging 3.33 goals per game this season … Gianna Huet racked up a season-best five points on Wednesday and ranks second on the team this season with 19 points.
