How It Happened
• The two starting pitchers were outstanding early as
Dillon Michaloski and Nick Bell were on-point through the first three innings. Michaloski retired nine of the first ten that he faced with the lone runner coming in the top of the third as Luke Keister singled with two outs in the third. The Spartans got a pair of singles in the top of the first but Bell retired the next seven he faced for Shenandoah.
• York got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Michael Tinneny singled to center to start the uprising. After a ground out moved him to second,
Jacob Deimling walked to put runners at first and second.
Joe Urban hit a ground ball that looked destined to be a double play but an error on the Hornets allowed Tinneny to score and Deimling to move to third. Deimling then scored on a
Matthew Wade fielder's choice to put the Spartans up 2-0.
• The Hornets answered right back in the top of the fifth inning. Haden Madagan singled up the middle to kick off the frame. After a fly out, Matthew Atchley doubled off the wall in right to score Madagan, slicing the Spartan lead in half. Keister laid down a sacrifice bunt but a Spartan error allowed Atchley score score on the miscue while Keister ended up at second. After stealing third, Keister scored on a Jamie Padilla sacrifice fly to take the 3-2 lead.
• The Hornets loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but
Bryce Shaffer worked out of the jam. The Hornets got a lead-off single from Padilla to start the seventh but
Jason Cassidy got the next three batters out to keep the Shenandoah lead at one.
• The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the seventh as
Dawson Shelley led off the inning with a single through the right side. After a
Lucas Prendergast sac bunt moved Shelley to second, the Hornets got the second out with a strikeout. Tinneny came up huge again for York as he drove a double off the right field wall, tying the game at three. After
Alex Neeld was intentionally walked, Deimling ripped a shot to right. The Hornet right fielder lost the ball in the sun and it bounced five feet in front of him and skipped past him, allowing Neeld to score all the way from first for the 5-3 lead.
• Cassidy got the Hornets in order in the eighth setting the stage for the Spartans to tack on a run in the bottom of the frame.
Gabe Trevena tripled with one out and came around to score on a two-out single from Prendergast. Closer
Ethan Kennedy allowed a lead off single but he got a foul out and two fly outs to close out the Spartan win. Â
