Men's Lacrosse Open 2025 with Road Win at St. Mary's

Davis Fisher tallied seven points in the win for the Spartans

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College men's lacrosse squad kicked off their 2025 campaign with a 13-11 win at St. Mary's College on Sunday in St. Mary's City, Maryland.
The Spartans had a big first quarter but scuffled offensively in the second half as the Seahawks made a goalie switch at the half. The switch was effective as York scored just two goals in the third quarter and were shutout in the fourth but did enough early to earn the road win.
The Spartans improve to 1-0 overall while St. Mary's falls to 0-1.

How It Happened
After a few fruitless possessions to begin the game, the Spartans got their first goal of the year when Coleton Mahorney ripped a shot from the 15 yards out in front of the cage for the 1-0 lead. Davis Fisher earned the assist on the goal that came just under five minutes into the game. York made it 3-0 with goals on back-to-back possessions as Dylan McDougall recorded his first Spartan goal and was followed by a Cory Bergmann tally just 29 seconds later.
• Bergmann added his second goal of the day to put the Spartans up 4-0 as Fisher recorded his third helper of the game. The Seahawks finally got on the board with a Joshua Martel goal of a rebound of an Aiden Doyle shot that was initially saved by Spartan goalie Nash Womack. York wasted little time in getting that goal right back as Terence Harmon won the face off and Nate Schilling scored York's fifth goal off a pass from Mahorney with 1:27 left in the quarter. Schilling found the back of the next just under 45 seconds later for the 6-1 Spartan lead. St. Mary's responded with a Declan Horton goal but Fisher put one home right before the first quarter horn as York led 7-2 after one.
• The scoring pace slowed in the second quarter as the Spartans finished the frame with a 4-3 edge in goals. Fisher, Zach Rutledge, McDougall, and Schilling each scored for the Spartans in the quarter with Rutledge's goal being a pole goal for the Green and White as York took an 11-5 lead to the intermission.
• St. Mary's kicked off the second half scoring with a man-up goal from Horton, the Hawks second man-up goal of the game. The Seahawks further cut into the Spartan lead as Martel drilled a one-timer off a pass from Keegan Preis, slicing the Spartan lead to 11-7 with 8:52 left in the third. Connor Stewart slowed the St. Mary's run with a coast-to-coast goal as he took the clear from Womack and drilled his first career Spartan goal. Grad transfer Gavin Gismondi pushed York's lead back to six with his first Spartan goal at the 2:22 mark. The Seahawks picked up their third man-up goal to close out the third as York's lead was 13-8 after three quarters of play. Womack played well in the quarter with six saves as the hosts outshot the Spartans 11-8.
• The Seahawks struck for a second straight goal 40 seconds into the fourth as Nick Machiran finished off a drive to the cage, trimming York's lead back down to four at 13-9. The St. Mary's momentum kept going with a Martel goal with 6:26 left in regulation as the Spartan lead was down to 13-10. St. Mary's closed out the scoring with Horton's fourth goal of the game with 1:01 left as the Seahawks continued their fourth quarter charge. St. Mary's won the ensuing face off but the Spartans killed off the final minute of the game to earn the win.
