Spartans Hold Off Arcadia at Home to Remain Undefeated

YORK, Pa. - After running out to a big early lead, the York College men's basketball team held off a late rally by preseason MAC Freedom favorite Arcadia to prevail 77-71 at home on Wednesday night.

The Knights erased an 18-point first half deficit and took the lead with under two minutes to go, but the Spartans ended the game on a 9-1 run to snuff out Arcadia's comeback bid. Jayden Rowe led York in points (22), rebounds (7) and assists (4), while Ben Troyer poured in a career-high 20 points off the bench for the Green and White.

How It Happened
The Spartans came out hot and ran up an 18-8 lead through the first six minutes of play, scoring all 18 of their points from three-point range. York shot an impressive 6-for-7 from beyond the arc during that span with Tate Landis and Cooper Haberern knocking down three each.

York continued to pour it on as they went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-point lead, their largest of the game, with 9:26 left in the first half. Landis led the way with five points on that run as she finished the first half with 11. Ben Troyer contributed the other three points during that span as he also ended the first half with 11 points.

After the Spartans reached their high water mark, the Knights found some rhythm and out-scored York 25-15 through the final nine minutes of the first half as the York lead shrunk to 41-33 at the halftime break. Despite cooling off down the stretch, the Spartans ended up with some impressive first-half numbers as they shot 60.0% from the field with 10 of their 15 made field goals coming from beyond the three-point arc.

The two teams slugged it out through the first 10 minutes of the second half with each scoring 17 points as York clung to a 58-50 lead. Jayden Rowe powered York out of the halftime break with nine points through just 10 minutes of play, while Josh Parks poured in eight for Arcadia during that same stretch.

After hitting the 10-minute mark in the second half, the Spartans cooled off and shot just 4-for-13 over the next eight minutes while the Knights racked up a 20-10 run and took their first lead of the game, 70-68, with 1:45 left to play. Jamison Lynam led the way for Arcadia during that span with 10 points as he went on to finish the game with a game-high 23.

Arcadia's lead was short-lived as Haberern knocked down a three on the ensuing York possession, but the Knights tied it up, 71-71, on a Joshua Okocha free throw with 1:13 left. Arcadia had a chance to regain the lead on Okocha's second free throw attempt, but Amyr Walker was called for a lane violation which wiped out the free throw and gave the ball back to York.

Momentum continued to build in York's favor as Rowe knocked down a jumper on the ensuing York possession and then Lynam was whistled for an offensive foul on Arcadia's next trip down the floor. Rowe made Lynam's turnover hurt even worse when he knocked down a huge three-pointer on York's very next possession which ultimately sealed the win as the Spartans went ahead, 76-71, with 16 seconds left.

After surrendering the lead for the first time on the night with 1:45 left, York responded in a big way by out-scoring the Knights 9-1 the rest of the way. Rowe led York with six points down the stretch as he and Haberern combined to go 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.

Up Next
The Spartans will enjoy a break as they return to the court on December 3 to face Dickinson at home in a non-conference contest.
