Rowe’s Big Night Lifts Spartans to Late Win Over Hopkins

Jayden Rowe Drops 30 Points to Carry York to Victory in Home Opener

YORK, Pa. - The York College men's basketball team used a late surge to pull out a 76-73 victory and leave Johns Hopkins stunned inside Wolf Gymnasium on Tuesday night in the Spartans' home opener.

After trailing at halftime, York turned it up in the second half and out-scored the Blue Jays, 43-35, while shooting 48.3% from the floor. Jayden Rowe led all players with 30 points for his second 30-point game of his career. Cooper Haberern and Tate Landis each poured in 12 with Landis knocking down six free throws.

Johns Hopkins 1-1
(RV) York 2-0

How It Happened
The two teams tied and swapped the lead several times to start the game before back-to-back three-pointers by Anthony Sciote broke the cycle and put the Spartans up, 18-13, with 11:34 left in the first half. A combined total of just three points were scored over the next four minutes as York maintained their lead, 19-15.

With 7:08 left in the first half, a Jeb Williams three-pointer sparked a 7-0 run for the Blue Jays and then went on to out-score the Spartans 23-14 to end the half. Wyatt Eglinton Manner and Tanti Felli each had seven points during that span to lead Hopkins as they took a 38-33 lead into the break.

Hopkins scored on their first two possessions of the second half and maintained a safe distance ahead of the Spartans through the first nine minutes of the half. York suddenly got right back in the game as Jayden Rowe led an 8-1 run over a two-minute span to give the Spartans their first lead of the second half, 58-57, with 8:10 remaining.

The Blue Jays would end up going back in front, but York never let their visitors take more than  a three-point lead down the stretch. The Spartans held Hopkins scoreless through the final 2:55 and eventually went ahead by one on a pair of Rowe free throws with 1:24 left before icing the game with a pair of Tate Landis free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

York held Hopkins to just a 32.35 field goal percentage in the second half after the Blue Jays shot nearly 46% in the first. The Spartans shot well over 40% from the field in both halves, but left their mark at the free throw line as they went 11-for-10 in the final 20 minutes.

Up Next
The Spartans will travel to Susquehanna University for a two-day tournament beginning on Friday. York opens up against Notre Dame (Md.) at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Notes
York is 7-5 all-time against Johns Hopkins dating back to the 1979-80 season … the win for York snapped a five-game losing streak against the Blue Jays - York last defeated Hopkins in 2018 when current Spartan head coach Jared Wagner dropped a 30-point performance (33) on  the Blue Jays just as Jayden Rowe did on Tuesday night to lead the Spartans to victory … Rowe now has a pair of 30-point performances for his career with a career-high 31 at Nazareth on Nov. 11, 2023.
