YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 MAC Commonwealth decision to first place Messiah on a brisk Tuesday night in York.
The Falcons got the game's lone goal in the 14
th minute and then were able to defend the Spartans and keep them off the board.
The Spartans are now 7-5-6 overall and 2-2-2 in the league. The Falcons now stand at 8-7-2 and 5-0-1 in the league.
How It Happened
• The Falcons had the better of the early play. Messiah had two early corner kicks with the second one yielding the only goal of the game. Gabe Redcay struck a corner from the right side and that kick was greeted by Sam Phillips' head as he banged home the header for his first goal of the year in the 14
th minute of play. It was almost 2-0 just four minutes later as Redcay hit another corner but this time Phillips hit the post as York avoided going down multiple goals.
• The Falcons controlled the first half as they finished the first 45 minutes with an 8-3 edge in total shots including a 4-0 margin in shots on goal. The Falcons also accumulated six corners in the opening half.
• The second half play was far more even as the Spartans actually had a little better of the possession. The Spartans had their best chance for a goal in the 76
th minute as
Philip Titiloye struck a beautiful header that was saved by Falcon goalie Forrest Kessler as he forced the ball over the bar. The Spartans got a shot off the ensuing corner kick but it was high and wide. The Spartans had three more shots that they put on goal in the final 12 minutes of the game but Kessler was up to the task in preserving the clean sheet.
• York out shot Messiah 11-1 in the second half including 3-1 in shots on goal. For the match, the Spartans held a 14-9 margin in total shots while the Falcons had five shots on goal to just three for York. The Falcons also had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
Spartan Notes
York is now 5-24-3 all-time against the Falcons as Messiah has won 13 straight in the series … York was shutout for the fifth time this year including four 1-0 losses and one 0-0 tie … York has now out-shot their opponents in 15 of their 18 games … York is now 3-3-2 at Graham Field with one game remaining in the regular season …
Chase Broughman made four saves in goal for the Spartans.
