YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team got a goal late to outlast Eastern University 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans controlled most of the game but Eagle goalie Faith Leake was up to the task as she kept the Spartans off the board until late in the game.
The Spartans have now won five in a row as they are 10-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Eagles fall to 7-4-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
How It Happened
• The Spartans had the better of the play the entire first half as they kept possession in the Eagles' defensive end of the field. York out-shot the Eagles 9-0 in first half shots including 6-0 in shots on goal. However, Eagle net minder Faith Leake was outstanding with six first half stops as the teams headed to the half locked in a scoreless tie.
• The Spartans continued to pressure the Eagles and Leake consistently turned the Spartans away. The clock continued to burn without a score as it looked like the Eagles might escape with a tie. However, the Spartans got the lone goal of the game with 4:22 left in regulation. The Spartans played the ball up the spine of the field before deciding to go wide. York then found
Lexi Mazzella just outside the upper left handed corner of the box. Mazzella quickly found
Meg Kalthof who one-timed a shot past Leake for the game's lone goal from about eight yards out.
• The Spartans killed off the final four minutes of regulation to earn the conference win. York out-shot Eastern 16-2 in the game including 11-1 in shots on goal. York did not surrender a corner as they had four of their own.
