Late Heroics Lifts Women’s Soccer to Victory at #16 Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. - The York women's soccer team scored twice in the final seven minutes and posted a crucial last-second save to pull off a dramatic comeback road victory over 16th-ranked Misericordia on Wednesday night.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 79th minute of play, Meg Kalthof went on to score in the 83rd and 89th minutes to put the Green and White in position to capture the victory in a heavyweight MAC crossover clash. Joss Metz preserved the win as she came up with a save on a penalty kick with less than 10 seconds left.

How It Happened
The Spartans withstood an early barrage by the Cougars out of the opening whistle with Joss Metz making three saves in the first 13 minutes. The chances for Misericordia dwindled as the first half unfolded, but York also struggled to generate opportunities as the Cougars owned a 6-1 edge in shots, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal, at the halftime break.

York flipped the script statistically in the second half as they owned a 9-2 shot margin. The Cougars made their shots count as they both landed on goal with one finding the back of the net in the 79th minute of play by Caelan Gallagher.

The Spartans responded quickly on a free-kick opportunity just five minutes later. Abby Brown started the play as she served the ball into the box from right to left. Brown's service bounced once before finding an unmarked Meg Kalthof who proceeded to bury a shot inside the left post for the equalizer.

York remained on the offensive and desperately searched for that go-ahead tally which eventually came in the 89th minute. Kalthof once again delivered for her team set-piece opportunity. The Spartan striker corralled a corner pass from left to right and had her initial shot blocked which popped straight up in the air. Kalthof tracked her own shot, won the 50-50 battle, and blistered a header over the out-stretched hands of Cougar keeper Lauren Mondor for the game-winning tally and her 10th goal of the season.

The Spartans had one more hill to climb before they could officially taste victory as Misericordia was awarded a penalty kick with less than 10 seconds to play. Metz read the shot by Brenna Field brilliantly as she dove to her right and gobbled up the shot while her Spartan teammates rushed the field to celebrate.
