Spartan Comeback Spoiled in Fifth Set by Hood

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan women's volleyball team nearly pulled off a reverse sweep, but came up short in a five-set loss to Hood at home on Tuesday night as the Blazers snapped their nine-match losing streak.

How It Happened
The Blazers looked like they were well on their way to a sweep as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 26-24 victory in set one and a decisive 25-14 win in set two. Hood hit a robust .355 in the opening frame followed by .333 in the second. Sami Betley and Cam Madden led the way for the Blazers with nine kills each through the first two sets while Maria Ricketts dished out a total of 20 assists.

York bounced back with a 25-18 win in the third set as the Spartans hit a collective .303 with 15 kills. Tiffani King provided a spark off the bench as she posted four kills and four digs in her first appearance of the match. Sami Baer also shined with a team-high six digs in the frame.

The Spartans trailed 24-23 in the fourth set, but ripped off three unanswered points with two kills and an ace to claim a 26-24 victory. King provided one of those crucial kills down the stretch and ended with a team-high five in the set. Baer was once again brilliant defensively as she posted 11 more digs.

In the fifth set, the Blazers jumped out a 5-1 lead and never relinquished the lead as they edged out a 15-13 win to clinch the match. Madden notched the clinching kill and finished with three in the final set, while Ann Ofoegbu led the way with five.

Ofoegbu led all players with 23 kills on the night, while hitting .488 and went over 1000 career kills early in the match. Ricketts led all players with 49 assists and Madden led everyone with four blocks.

For the Spartans, Morgan Nolte led the way with 14 kills, Maddie Hoffman led the team with 29 assists and Baer led all players with 29 digs.
