YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team made their 2024 home debut a successful one as they outlasted Gettysburg College 1-0 in a non-conference match at Graham Field in York.
The Spartans got a goal early in the first half and rode their defense from there as first year net minder
Joss Metz posted her second straight shutout.
The Spartans improve to 2-0-1 while the Bullets are now 0-2.
How It Happened
• The Spartans thought they had struck early as
Meg Kalthof took a great pass from
Julianna Schilling and finished off the chance 53 seconds into the game. The only problem for the Spartans was the sideline official was holding up his flag, signifying off sides, wiping away the goal.
• Thirteen minutes later, the Spartans drew a foul just outside the top of the box. Junior captain
Abby Brown stepped up to take the kick. Her shot hit the bottom of the crossbar, bounced straight down and then caromed into the net for the goal in the 14th minute.
• The squads ended the opening 45 minutes tied with four shots each while the Spartans had three corner kicks. Freshman keeper
Joss Metz recorded three first-half saves for the Green and White.
• The Spartans were not as crisp in the second half as the Bullets battled their way back into the game. Gettysburg had the better of the run of play as they out shot York 7-5 but Metz notched three saves to preserve the clean sheet, her second straight, and the win.
• Gettysburg finished the game with an 11-9 edge in total shots and a 6-4 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans did have a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks while York was also called for five off sides violations.
