Spartans Shutout By Stevens at Home

YORK, Pa. - The York women's soccer team suffered just their second defeat of the season and their first at home this season in a 2-0 setback to Stevens on Saturday.

The Ducks tallied a pair of goals less than two minutes apart late in the first half and limited the Spartans to a season-low two shots on a rainy, muggy afternoon at Graham Field

Team Records
Stevens 3-4-2
York 5-2-3

How It Happened
The Ducks broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute on Alina Friz's second tally of the season. The play started with Sarah Wnorowski slicing through the Sparta defense and ripping a shot from left to right which forced a diving save by Joss Metz. Friz stepped in front of a defender and put a shot on target which was again turned away by Metz, but Friz followed her own rebound and knocked it in past a sprawling Metz who was unable to make a third-consecutive stop.

Stevens found the back of the net less than two full minutes later when Sophia Murphy tallied her second of the year. The Ducks kept a corner set piece alive as Abby Harris served a ball in from the left wing. Kaitlyn Pettit headed the pass down to Murphy in the right side of the box who stung a low shot to the left corner past an outstretched hand of Metz.

The Ducks had chances in the final two minutes to bust the game wide open with a third goal, but Metz managed to make two key saves. Friz nearly struck again for Stevens as she followed up another rebound off a Metz save with six seconds left, but sent her shot just over the bar from eight yards out

Stevens pummeled the Spartans with 11 total shots in the first with six on target. The Ducks sagged back in the second half and protected their lead. York was limited to just one shot in each half and put just one on target which came in the 66th minute of play by Meg Kalthof.

Notes
Saturday marked the inaugural meeting between the two programs … the loss is York's first at home this season as they are now 3-1-1 at Graham Field and 6-2-1 in their last 10 at home … the win is the first for Stevens on the road this season as they are now 1-3-1 … the Spartans have surrendered multiple goals only twice this season and both occasions resulted in 2-0 losses … Steven now has four shutouts on the season … York was held to a season-low two shots which is their lowest total since Nov. 5, 2022 (at Messiah) … the Ducks have held three different opponents to less than 10 shots this season.
