Women's Soccer Suffers First Setback of the Year

W&L downs the Spartans 2-0 in a non-conference tilt on Sunday

LEXINGTON, VA – The York College women's soccer team saw their season opening unbeaten streak come to an end on Sunday as Washington & Lee downed the Green and White 2-0 in Lexington, Virginia.
The Generals got a goal in each half, snapping the Spartans' lengthy defensive scoreless streak.
Washington & Lee, who are receiving votes in the national polls, improve to 4-1 overall. York suffers their first loss of the year and fall to 3-1-2.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got a pair of shots in the first ten minutes of play as a majority of the play was contested in the middle of the field. In the 18th minute, the Generals had a throw in that was collected by Megan Zimmerman. Zimmerman dribbled the ball towards the box before unleashing a 22-yard shot that found the upper right 90. That goal was the first run-of-play goal that the Spartans have allowed in 2024.
• The squads got a little more offensive over the final 25 minutes of the half. The Generals ended the half out-shooting York 7-4 but the teams had just one shot on goal each. Washington & Lee had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks for the half.
• The Generals struck for a second goal early in the second half as Shay Bowman carried the ball down the sideline in front of the Spartan bench. She flicked a pass to Sophie Berman who slipped a pass to Emily Burke. Burke took a pair of touches and ripped a shot that went off an extended Joss Metz up under the cross bar for the two-goal advantage in the game's 50th minute.
• Washington & Lee was able to maintain their lead, not allowing the Spartans to have many offensive opportunities. The Generals ended the game with a 15-9 margin in total shots while their advantage in shots on goal was a much closer total of 4-3. The hosts also held a 5-1 bulge in corner kicks. There were a mere seven fouls called in the game with York being whistled for five of the seven infractions.
