YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer squad was tied 1-1 against Lancaster Bible College in a non-conference contest on a pristine Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans scored in the first half while the Chargers notched the equalizer midway through the second half to forge the tie.
York dominated the game statistically but the Chargers were tied where it counted on the scoreboard.
The Spartans had their two-game win streak snapped as they are now 3-0-3 overall. Lancaster Bible is now 1-2-1. The Chargers gained a measure of revenge after the Spartans beat them 6-0 in Lancaster last season.
How It Happened
• It looked like the Spartan put in an opening goal in the third minute of the game.
Noah Roche struck a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Chris Jackson. The rebound came to the foot of
Jack Mitzelfelt who banged home the rebound for the apparent 1-0 lead. The Spartan celebration was short-lived as the sideline official had raised his flag indicating that he felt that Mitzelfelt was off sides, negating the early tally.
• The teams went back and forth over the next 25 minutes before the Spartans found the back of the net in the 31
st minute. This one counted as
Brandon Holy played a ball in from the left wing.
Colin Findlay got a foot on the ball as he poked it over to a diving
Dermot Williamson who finished off the chance for his second goal of the year. The Spartans forced Jackson to make two more saves in the final 15 minutes of the half but the Green and White had to settle for a one goal halftime lead.
• York looked like it had added to the lead in the 54
th minute as Mitzelfelt drilled a header off the crossbar and Roche followed with a shot that Jackson made a save on. The Spartan barrage continued until the Green and White committed a foul just over midfield. The Chargers made the most of the chance as Owen Shoemaker lofted the free kick into the middle of the box. The ball got pinged around before Joel Walker was able to get a foot on the ball. Walker's shot navigated all the traffic in the box and snuck inside the right post for the tying goal in the 66
th minute.
• The goal seemed to light a fire under the Spartan offense but Jackson and the Charger defense was up to the task. If the Lancaster Bible defense wasn't blocking shots, it was Jackson making a save as he kept the Spartans from notching the go-ahead goal in the final 20 plus minutes of the match.
• York out shot the Chargers 31-7 including 12-3 in shots on goal. York had an 8-1 bulge in corner kicks but Jackson finished with 11 saves for LBC.
