YORK, PA – The York College athletic department announced their 2023-24 William DeMeester Academic Awards as final grades have been calculated and posted for the Spartan spring semester.
The DeMeester Awards recognize the male and female four-year student-athletes who have the highest cumulative GPA for their careers. The DeMeester team awards recognize the teams with the highest GPA during the current academic year.
York had another fantastic year as the department boasted an overall GPA of 3.42 for 472 Spartans during the 2034-24 academic year. The Spartans had 57 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year. York had 54 % of their student-athletes end their year with a 3.5 GPA or above while 79.2% had over a 3.0 for the campaign. All 22 varsity programs (indoor and outdoor track squads are combined on each side) had above 3.16 team GPAs for the year as a team.
The Spartan men's lacrosse team captured the men's team award with a 3.57 GPA for the year. Men's Golf, fresh off a MAC Commonwealth title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, was second at 3.35 while baseball and swimming tied for third at 3.30. On the women's side, the volleyball squad had the best GPA of the department with a sterling 3.79 team GPA. Field Hockey placed second at 3.69 while softball was third at 3.66.
The two individual DeMeester Award winners were women's lacrosse midfielder
Madison Kurland while men's soccer midfielder
Luke Nall earned the men's honor.
Kurland finished her Spartan career with a 4.0 cumulative GPA as she graduated with a degree in biology while she minored in psychology. She helped lead the Spartans to a third straight MAC Commonwealth title along with three straight NCAA Tournament berths.
Nall owns a 3.98 GPA as a computer engineering major. He is three-year starter for the men's soccer team as he has played in 53 games with 51 starts. Nall has 28 career points on eight goals and 12 assists. He has three career game-winning goals for the Spartans. He is set to return to the lineup in 2024 as he uses his COVID year of eligibility.
