Spartans Take Two at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Spartan softball team extended their win streak to seven following a Commonwealth doubleheader sweep at Widener on Monday evening.

The Spartans needed seventh-inning heroics by Emma Wade to pull off a 9-5 comeback win in game one. The York offense erupted in game two and Natalie Rietema silenced the Pride bats down the stretch in a 17-6 Spartan victory.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBIs by Daphney Adams and Bri McKeown.
  • Natalie Rietema no-hit the Pride through the first first five frames, while the Spartans clung to their 2-0 lead as their bats went silent for five-consecutive innings following first.
  • Widener woke up their bats in the sixth and Katelyn Tong broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field to load the bases. The Pride proceeded to tack on five runs on just two more hits to take a 5-2 lead at the end of six innings of play.
  • The Spartans rallied in the seventh and took the lead with seven runs on just three hits as they drew four walks. York scored three runs on three walks, including the game-tying run, before Emma Wade put the Spartans in the lead and clinched the win with a grand slam.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans and Pride traded runs in the first inning as they played to a 1-1 tie. The two teams exchanged blows again in the second, except the Pride busted open a 6-2 lead with five runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Katelyn Tong.
  • The Pride's lead did not last long as the Spartans came storming back in the third with nine runs on seven hits with three Widener errors. York scored seven of their runs in the third with two outs, including back-to-back home runs by Gretchen Barstad and Daphney Adams to punctuate the rally.
  • The Spartans erupted for six more runs in the fifth inning and held the Pride scoreless in the bottom half to end the game on the run rule. Natalie Rietema shutdown the Pride offense in the final three frames as she allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings.

The Spartans return home on Tuesday to face Gettysburg in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

The Spartans have now won seven-straight against Widener to improve to 13-3 all-time against the Pride … York extended their win streak to seven this season … the Spartans are now 11-4 on the road, while Widener falls to 2-6 at home … York has recorded double-digit hits in three of their last four games after racking up 17 in game two … the Spartans have scored double-digit runs seven times this season, including 17 or more runs four times … Emma Wade hit a team-high .800 (4-for-5) on the day and slugged a team-best .875 with a team-leading seven RBI … she extended her Commonwealth lead in home runs to eight on the season and RBI leading total to 46 … Daphney Adams and Gretchen Barstad joined Wade with four hits on the day … Adams and Barstad tied for the team lead with five runs each on the evening … Barstad regained the conference hit lead (35) following her 4-for-4 performance in game two … Natalie Rietema picked up two more wins to move into a three-way tie for first in the Commonwealth with nine as she recorded nine strikeouts with nine walks and four earned runs in 10.2 innings of work.
